Talc and Pyrophyllite Production by Country

Talc and pyrophyllite production by country measures how much talc and pyrophyllite each country mines, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production of talc and pyrophyllite, in line with the underlying sources. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2019-2024, sparse coverage), built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table covers 14 countries, all with individual 2025 estimates from the source, which produced a combined 6,110,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 790,000 tonnes, this equals exactly the World total of 6,900,000 tonnes reported in the source. Eight countries appear with 2024-2025 data only, as they are not listed in the earlier Our World in Data series.

Largest Talc and Pyrophyllite-Producing Countries in 2025

India produced the most talc and pyrophyllite in 2025 with 1,500,000 tonnes. China ranked second with 1,300,000, followed by Brazil (570,000), the United States (490,000), South Africa (300,000), South Korea (300,000), Türkiye (300,000), France (300,000), Afghanistan (200,000), and Finland (200,000).

India alone accounted for about 22 percent of the World total in 2025, and India and China together for about 41 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 49 percent. India's output was about 1.2 times that of China. Three countries produced at least 500,000 tonnes in 2025.

Talc and Pyrophyllite Production Around the World

In Asia, India (1,500,000) leads, ahead of China (1,300,000), South Korea (300,000), Pakistan (200,000), Afghanistan (200,000), and Japan (130,000). In Europe, Türkiye (300,000) leads, ahead of France (300,000), Finland (200,000), and Italy (170,000).

In the Americas, Brazil (570,000) leads, ahead of the United States (490,000) and Canada (150,000). In Africa, South Africa (300,000) is the only listed producer. No producer in Oceania is listed individually in this dataset.

Largest Changes in Talc and Pyrophyllite Production, 2024-2025

The United States recorded the largest increase, rising from 457,000 tonnes in 2024 to 490,000 in 2025 (up 33,000, about 7 percent). France rose from 280,000 to 300,000 (up 20,000, about 7 percent), and Afghanistan from 190,000 to 200,000 (up 10,000).

South Africa recorded the largest decline, falling from 390,000 to 300,000 tonnes (down 90,000, about 23 percent). Brazil fell from 649,000 to 570,000 (down 79,000, about 12 percent), South Korea by 22,000, Pakistan by 21,000, Finland by 12,000, Türkiye by 4,000, and India by 40,000 (from 1,540,000 to 1,500,000, about 3 percent).

The World total fell from 7,200,000 to 6,900,000 tonnes (down 300,000, about 4.2 percent).

Methodology

The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national talc and pyrophyllite production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series has sparse coverage (2019-2024), with most countries showing figures only in specific years. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, where all 14 countries in the table are reported individually. Values refer to mine production of talc and pyrophyllite, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The sum of individually reported country estimates equals the reported World total for 2025 when combined with the "Other countries" value. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
