Titanium Rutile Production by Country

Rutile production by country shows how much rutile is mined in each country, measured in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production of rutile (a titanium mineral concentrate); ilmenite is reported separately by the source and is not included here. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2020-2024), built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table covers 13 countries included in the underlying data during the period. USGS reports 2025 estimates for 6 countries, which produced a combined 443,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 9,000 tonnes, this totals 452,000 tonnes including "Other countries". The USGS World total covers ilmenite and rutile combined, so it is not used as a standalone rutile total here. Kenya is listed by the source without a 2025 value (41,000 tonnes in 2024), and the United States is listed as suppressed (s); Senegal (9,000, 2022), Madagascar (6,000, 2023), Malaysia (3,708, 2022), Sri Lanka (2,150, 2022), and Tanzania (0) retain older values.

Largest Titanium Rutile-Producing Countries in 2025

Australia produced the most rutile in 2025 with 200,000 tonnes. Sierra Leone ranked second with 110,000, followed by South Africa (100,000), India (13,000), Ukraine (10,000), and Mozambique (10,000).

Australia alone accounted for about 44 percent of the 2025 total including Other countries, and Australia and Sierra Leone together for about 69 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 91 percent. Australia's output was about 1.8 times that of Sierra Leone. Two countries exceeded 100,000 tonnes in 2025: Australia and Sierra Leone. South Africa produced exactly 100,000 tonnes.

Rutile Production Around the World

In Oceania, Australia (200,000) is the dominant producer. In Africa, Sierra Leone (110,000) leads, ahead of South Africa (100,000), Mozambique (10,000), Senegal (9,000, 2022), Madagascar (6,000, 2023), and Kenya (41,000, 2024, last reported year).

In Asia, India (13,000) is the largest producer, ahead of Malaysia (3,708, 2022) and Sri Lanka (2,150, 2022); Tanzania (0) retains an older zero. In Europe, Ukraine (10,000) is the only listed producer. No producer in the Americas has a reported 2025 value; the United States is suppressed (s) in the source.

Largest Changes in Rutile Production, 2024-2025

Sierra Leone recorded the largest increase, rising from 80,000 tonnes in 2024 to 110,000 in 2025 (up 30,000, about 38 percent). India rose from 12,000 to 13,000, and Ukraine and Mozambique each rose by 1,000 tonnes. Australia (200,000) held its level.

South Africa recorded the largest decline, falling from 102,000 to 100,000 tonnes (down 2,000, about 2 percent). Kenya (41,000 in 2024) has no 2025 value, so it leaves the reported list.

Production across the individually reported countries increased by a combined 31,000 tonnes, while the "Other countries" category fell by 1,000 tonnes (from 10,000 to 9,000).

Where the earlier series provided a 2024 value, the revisions are visible: Ukraine was revised down from 10,000 to 9,000 tonnes and Mozambique up from 8,000 to 9,000, while Australia held at 200,000. For Sierra Leone, Kenya, and South Africa, the earlier series ends in 2023, so their 2024 values come directly from the source.

The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national rutile production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series covers 2020-2024. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; countries not reported individually keep their latest available values from the earlier series. Values refer to mine production of rutile, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The source reports the World total for ilmenite and rutile combined; therefore, this page presents the sum of the individually reported countries plus the "Other countries" value instead of a separate rutile World total. The source lists Kenya without a 2025 value and the United States as suppressed (s). In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
