Treenuts Consumption by Country

The three largest treenuts reporters sit within 272 thousand tonnes of each other. The United States held 3,408 thousand tonnes of listed food supply in 2023, India 3,176 and China 3,136, from a 28,697-thousand-tonne total that grew 15.4 percent over five years. India led that five-year gain yet also led the single-year decline, falling 394 thousand tonnes between 2022 and 2023 while Iran and Türkiye rose. The per-capita ranking belongs to high-income small reporters, led by Switzerland at 30.20 kilograms per person per year.

Treenuts Consumption

The United States leads at 3,408 thousand tonnes, only 1.07 times India at 3,176, with China third at 3,136 and Germany a distant fourth at 2,095. Per capita the table inverts: Switzerland at 30.20 kilograms from 268 thousand tonnes, then Qatar at 27.03 and Libya at 25.85 kilograms. Germany appears in both rankings, fourth by total at 2,095 thousand tonnes and fourth per person at 24.77 kilograms.

Treenuts Food Supply at a Glance

  • The United States had the largest listed treenuts food supply in 2023 at 3,408 thousand tonnes.
  • India ranked second at 3,176 thousand tonnes, followed by China at 3,136 thousand tonnes.
  • Switzerland had the highest per-capita food supply at 30.20 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 28,697 thousand tonnes across 175 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed treenuts food supply increased by 3,836 thousand tonnes, or 15.4 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The treenuts aggregate covers the tree-nut items in the FAO Food Balances classification, with the top three leaders sitting within 272 thousand tonnes, less than one tenth of the leader's supply. Germany and Canada sit in both the volume and the per-capita top ten.

India's reversal between the two windows is the defining temporal contrast. It contributed 24.9 percent of the five-year net gain, then recorded the largest single-year fall of any reporter. Vietnam more than tripled over five years, while Bangladesh and Morocco more than doubled.

The United States, India and China Sit Within 272 Thousand Tonnes

The 2023 table is led by the United States at 3,408 thousand tonnes, with India second at 3,176 and China third at 3,136. Germany and Türkiye complete the top five at 2,095 and 1,272 thousand tonnes, respectively. The United States holds 11.9 percent of the 28,697-thousand-tonne listed total, and its supply is only 1.07 times India's.

The top three reporters accounted for 33.9 percent of the listed total, the top five 45.6 percent and the top ten 61.0 percent. The gap between first and third is smaller than the fifth-ranked reporter's total. Per capita, the contrast with the volume table is complete: none of the top three by total appears in the per-capita top ten, while Switzerland's 30.20 kilograms per person leads a ranking of small high-income reporters.

India's 394-Thousand-Tonne Fall Offsets Iran and Türkiye in a 1.1 Percent Annual Rise

Among the 175 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 28,385 thousand tonnes to 28,697 thousand tonnes, a gain of 312 thousand tonnes (1.1 percent). The two years share the same 175 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Iran added 306 thousand tonnes (up 40.4 percent), Türkiye added 255 thousand tonnes (up 25.1 percent), Russia added 182 thousand tonnes (up 91.5 percent) and Saudi Arabia added 176 thousand tonnes (up 61.8 percent), while India fell 394 thousand tonnes (down 11.0 percent), China fell 197 thousand tonnes (down 5.9 percent), South Korea fell 196 thousand tonnes (down 27.8 percent) and Germany fell 182 thousand tonnes (down 8.0 percent).

India's single decline exceeded the net annual gain, so the 1.1 percent rise describes increases in Iran, Türkiye, Russia and Saudi Arabia outweighing falls in India, China, South Korea and Germany. India's 2023 value of 3,176 thousand tonnes remains well above its 2019 level of 2,221.

India Leads the Five-Year Gain as Vietnam More Than Triples

For the 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 24,861 thousand tonnes to 28,697 thousand tonnes, a gain of 3,836 thousand tonnes (15.4 percent). The 2019 total includes 176 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 175; Cuba, with 1 thousand tonne in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 955 thousand tonnes (up 43.0 percent), Vietnam added 659 thousand tonnes (up 211.2 percent), Türkiye added 389 thousand tonnes (up 44.1 percent), Saudi Arabia added 216 thousand tonnes (up 88.2 percent), Bangladesh added 187 thousand tonnes (up 105.6 percent), Morocco added 175 thousand tonnes (up 135.7 percent) and Iran added 167 thousand tonnes (up 18.6 percent), while South Korea fell 152 thousand tonnes (down 23.0 percent).

India contributes 24.9 percent of the five-year net increase, Vietnam 17.2 percent and Türkiye 10.1 percent. Vietnam's rise from 312 to 971 thousand tonnes, Bangladesh's from 177 to 364 and Morocco's from 129 to 304 are substantial proportional increases from smaller bases. India, Vietnam, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, the four largest absolute contributors, together account for 57.8 percent of the net gain.

What Does the Treenuts Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Treenuts item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined treenuts total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums the tree-nut items, which are also covered individually in separate articles.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why treenuts look concentrated among populous countries by total but among small high-income countries per person.

Treenuts Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, the United States had the largest listed treenuts food supply among the 175 reporters with reported values, at 3,408 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 3,176 thousand tonnes, while China ranked third at 3,136 thousand tonnes. Switzerland had the highest per-capita treenuts food supply at 30.20 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of treenuts actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Treenuts from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 176 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 28,697 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 175 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the treenuts aggregate; individual tree-nut items are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the top three treenuts reporters so close together?

The FAO Food Balances data show the United States at 3,408 thousand tonnes, India at 3,176 and China at 3,136 thousand tonnes in 2023. The three sit within 272 thousand tonnes of each other, which is less than one tenth of the leader's supply.

Why did Vietnam's treenuts supply rise 211.2 percent over five years?

Vietnam's listed supply rose from 312 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 971 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 659 thousand tonnes. The figures show the size of the increase, but they do not identify what caused it.

Is the food supply of treenuts the same as treenuts eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
