Uncooked Pasta, Not Stuffed or Otherwise Prepared Consumption by Country

China had the largest listed food supply of uncooked, non-stuffed pasta in 2023, at 1,448,514 tonnes, or about 22.6 percent of the reported total. Peru ranked second with 437,188 tonnes, followed by the United States at 380,827 tonnes. On a per-person basis, Peru ranked first at 35.39 grams a day, ahead of Venezuela at 31.42 grams and Djibouti at 29.10 grams. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual consumption.

Germany placed fourth at 344,680 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 35.4 percent of the listed 2023 total.

• South Korea recorded the largest decline by tonnage in the latest year.
• Egypt lost more than four-fifths of its 2022 level.
• Iraq recorded the largest listed gain by volume.
• Peru added 41,636 tonnes, up 10.5 percent.

South Korea's Reported Pasta Supply Falls Sharply

South Korea lost 104,660 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 98.2 percent to 1,950 tonnes. Egypt lost 36,993 tonnes, down 81.7 percent, and Libya shed 30,124 tonnes, down 66.8 percent. Iraq added 79,246 tonnes, up 245.4 percent, Iran added 56,970 tonnes, up 88.2 percent, and Peru added 41,636 tonnes, up 10.5 percent. Every country with a 2022 value also reported one for 2023, so that shared total moved from 6,409,254 tonnes to 6,411,484 tonnes, up 2,230 tonnes, with no entries or exits.

The United Kingdom Records the Largest Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 175 countries with a value in both years rose from 5,945,355 tonnes to 6,411,484 tonnes, up 466,129 tonnes, or 7.8 percent. The United Kingdom added 143,250 tonnes, up 88.0 percent, including a jump from 164,691 tonnes in 2021 to 299,182 tonnes in 2022 that the source data do not explain. Peru added 127,528 tonnes, up 41.2 percent, and the United States added 83,656 tonnes, up 28.1 percent. Angola lost 107,839 tonnes, down 80.2 percent, South Korea lost 88,255 tonnes, down 97.8 percent, and Kenya gave up 63,405 tonnes, down 35.1 percent. Cuba reported 5,326 tonnes in 2019 and none afterwards, and no country entered the comparison.

Peru Leads in Per-Capita Pasta Supply

Peru recorded 35.39 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Venezuela at 31.42 grams in second and Djibouti at 29.10 grams in third. Luxembourg sat fourth at 25.99 grams, with Malta at 25.28 grams and Barbados at 23.98 grams. China, first by volume, ranked ninety-sixth per person at 2.79 grams, so the two rankings point to very different countries here.

What the Pasta Supply Figures Measure

Uncooked pasta, not stuffed or otherwise prepared, available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size.

Three series in this table change sharply enough to warrant a source check: South Korea fell from 106,610 tonnes to 1,950 tonnes in a single year, Senegal reported zero after 2,718 tonnes, and Sri Lanka reported zero after 84.23 tonnes. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so neither one on its own shows that availability stopped.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023. Element 5141 reports food supply for human consumption in tonnes, while element 665 reports food supply in grams per capita per day, for uncooked pasta, not stuffed or otherwise prepared. The annual listed total sums reporting countries with available values and excludes regional aggregates. Of the 176 country rows, 175 reported a value in 2023 and 173 of those were above zero. Year-to-year and five-year changes are calculated using countries with reported values at both endpoints, which gives the same set of 175 countries in both windows. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are retained, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.
