Condensed Whey Consumption by Country
Poland reported the largest food supply of condensed whey in 2023, at 599,470 tonnes, about 44.3 percent of the listed total of 1,354,261 tonnes. Italy ranked second at 479,943 tonnes, followed by the Netherlands at 107,000 tonnes. Poland also ranked first per person, at 42.37 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Which country has the highest condensed whey food supply? Poland had the largest listed food supply of condensed whey in 2023, at 599,470 tonnes, followed by Italy at 479,943 tonnes and the Netherlands at 107,000 tonnes. Together, these three countries accounted for 87.6 percent of the 1,354,261 tonnes listed across reporting countries. Poland also ranked first in food supply per person, at 42.37 grams per person per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Denmark placed fourth at 49,279 tonnes, with the United States fifth at 31,140 and Sweden sixth at 25,511. Thailand, Kazakhstan, Slovakia and Hungary closed the top ten between 7,857 and 14,066 tonnes. The top three held 87.6 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 93.5 percent. Italy added 54,306 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 12.8 percent. Poland added 20,770 tonnes, up 3.6 percent. Sweden added 6,736 tonnes, up 35.9 percent. Austria lost 15,532 tonnes, down 84.2 percent. The United States shed 9,341 tonnes, down 23.1 percent. Denmark gave up 9,063 tonnes, down 15.5 percent. Slovakia fell 8,615 tonnes, down 46.8 percent. Hungary dropped 2,897 tonnes, down 26.9 percent. The 38 countries with reported values in both years rose from 1,312,117 tonnes to 1,354,131 tonnes, up 42,014 tonnes, or 3.2 percent. Honduras, North Macedonia and South Korea first reported values in 2023, totalling 129 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 26 countries with reported values in both years surged from 973,088 tonnes to 1,339,396 tonnes, up 366,308 tonnes, or 37.6 percent. Italy added 199,943 tonnes, up 71.4 percent, accounting for 54.6 percent of the net gain. Poland added 99,450 tonnes, up 19.9 percent. The Netherlands added 26,810 tonnes, up 33.4 percent. Denmark added 26,793 tonnes, up 119.2 percent. The United States lost 7,171 tonnes, down 18.7 percent. Thailand added 5,877 tonnes, up 71.8 percent. Hungary added 3,680 tonnes, up 88.1 percent. Kazakhstan added 3,300 tonnes, up 41.8 percent. Kuwait and Laos reported values in 2019 but not in 2023, while fifteen additional countries contributed 14,865 tonnes to the 2023 total. Poland ranked first in 2023 at 42.37 grams per person per day, almost twice Denmark's 22.70 grams in second. Italy placed third at 22.10 grams, with the Netherlands at 16.20 and Sweden at 6.62. Slovakia, Hungary, Tunisia, Kazakhstan and Austria followed below seven grams. Poland therefore led by total volume as well as per person. Condensed whey for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The dataset includes 44 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 41 have a reported value for 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints. The reported value for Austria fell from 18,452 tonnes in 2022 to 2,920 tonnes in 2023. Reported zeros are retained as supplied by FAO, while blank cells indicate missing data. These figures describe food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report condensed whey food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes are calculated relative to the earlier year's value. Percentage changes are not calculated when the earlier value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells are treated as missing data. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Who trails Poland per person?
Poland clearly led reported condensed whey per person in 2023, far above second-placed Denmark at 22.70 grams with Italy next at 22.10 grams in the same listed table that year.
How concentrated is condensed whey food supply?
Poland alone held 44.3 percent of the annual listed food supply total in 2023, and the top three together reached 87.6 percent of reported supply.
Which country had the largest increase from 2022 to 2023?
Italy added 54,306 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 12.8 percent to 479,943 tonnes, the largest absolute increase in the listed table over the comparison period.
Is this the amount people actually ate?
No. The figures represent food available for human consumption in the reference year, not measured individual intake. They may differ from the amount people actually consumed.
Which countries contributed most to the five-year increase?
Italy added 199,943 tonnes and Poland added 99,450 tonnes between 2019 and 2023, together accounting for most of the net listed gain over the period.
