Wind Electricity Generation by Country
Wind electricity generation by country measures the amount of electricity generated from wind power in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 84 countries with a reported 2024 value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 8.57 quad Btu in 2024, up from 7.91 in 2023.
Wind electricity generation measures the electricity produced from wind power, as reported in the EIA dataset. China alone accounted for about 40 percent of the World total in 2024, and China and the United States together for about 58 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 63 percent, the top five for about 71 percent, and the top ten for about 82 percent. China's wind electricity generation was about 2.2 times that of the United States, the second-largest generator. China generated the most wind electricity in 2024 with 3.4 quad Btu. The United States ranked second with 1.54 quad Btu, followed by Germany (0.46), Brazil (0.36), India (0.31), the United Kingdom (0.28), Spain (0.21), Canada (0.16), France (0.16), and Sweden (0.14). In Asia, China (3.4) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (0.31), Türkiye (0.12), and Japan (0.038). In Europe, Germany (0.46) is the largest generator, ahead of the United Kingdom (0.28), Spain (0.21), France (0.16), and Sweden (0.14). In North America, the United States (1.54) leads, ahead of Canada (0.16) and Mexico (0.067). In South America, Brazil (0.36) leads, ahead of Argentina (0.055) and Chile (0.036). In Africa, South Africa (0.043) leads, ahead of Morocco (0.024) and Egypt (0.022). In Oceania, Australia (0.12) leads, ahead of New Zealand (0.015). Wind electricity generation figures are concentrated among the largest generators: the top five generators account for about 71 percent of World generation in 2024, while the top ten account for about 82 percent. The largest generators remained concentrated at the top of the ranking throughout 2019-2024, with China remaining the largest generator in every year shown. China recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 3.02 quad Btu in 2023 to 3.4 in 2024 (up 0.38, about 12.5 percent). The United States rose by 0.11, and Brazil by 0.04. Germany recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.47 to 0.46 quad Btu (down 0.0164, about 3.5 percent). France fell from 0.17 to 0.16 (down 0.01), while Spain declined by 0.0056. The World total rose from 7.91 to 8.57 quad Btu (up 0.66, about 8.3 percent). Between 2019 and 2024, China's wind generation rose from 1.39 to 3.40 quad Btu and the United States' from 1.01 to 1.54 quad Btu, with steady growth in China and more variable growth in the United States and other markets. The World total for wind electricity generation moved between 4.85 and 8.57 quad Btu in this period. It was 4.85 in 2019, 5.44 in 2020, 6.31 in 2021, 7.2 in 2022, 7.91 in 2023, and then 8.57 in 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to wind electricity generation, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.37-12 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the individually listed countries may differ slightly from the reported World total because of rounding.
