Wind Capacity by Country

Wind capacity by country measures installed wind power plant capacity for each country, in gigawatts (GW). This covers onshore and offshore turbines together. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 152 countries, with 149 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 1,133.08 GW in 2024, up from 1,018.95 GW in 2023.

Wind Capacity by Country Map

China (521.75 GW) held about 46% of world wind capacity in 2024 — about 3.4 times the United States (152.10 GW). Germany (72.82 GW), India (48.16 GW) and Brazil (32.96 GW) completed the top five.

China accounted for about 46.1% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 59.5%, the top three about 65.9%, the top five about 73.1%, and the top ten about 83.9%.

China accounted for 70% of the world's wind-capacity increase

China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 441.89 to 521.75 GW (+79.85 GW, about 18.1%). The world total rose from 1,018.95 to 1,133.08 GW (+114.13 GW, about 11.2%), meaning China supplied about 70% of the net increase. The largest decline among reported country pairs was Kazakhstan, which fell by 0.029 GW, or about 2.0%.

Wind capacity remains highly concentrated

China (+18.1%), Brazil (+13.1%), India (+7.7%), Germany (+4.8%) and the United States (+3.2%) all expanded in 2024. China and the United States alone accounted for nearly 60% of global wind capacity, while the top ten held about 83.9%. This concentration means that changes in a relatively small group of countries have a large effect on the global total.

Wind capacity nearly doubled in five years

Reported world values were 620.50 GW in 2019, 733.32 GW in 2020, 824.08 GW in 2021, 902.54 GW in 2022, 1,018.95 GW in 2023 and 1,133.08 GW in 2024. Capacity ended about 82.6% above the 2019 level, with the world total increasing every year. China accounted for much of the expansion, rising from 209.58 GW to 521.75 GW over the same period.

Installed capacity is not electricity generation

Installed wind capacity measures the maximum generating capacity of the turbines in service, not the amount of electricity they produce during the year. Actual generation depends on factors such as wind conditions, turbine availability and operating conditions. A country can therefore have a large wind fleet without producing electricity in direct proportion to its installed capacity. The combined figure does not distinguish between onshore and offshore wind capacity, so countries with different mixes of the two technologies are ranked on their total installed capacity.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual installed wind capacity in gigawatts (GW). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers wind capacity only; other sources and generation are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries have the most wind capacity?

China (521.75 GW) and the United States (152.10 GW) had the largest wind capacity in 2024, followed by Germany (72.82 GW), India (48.16 GW) and Brazil (32.96 GW).

Why did China account for most of the 2024 increase?

China added 79.85 GW in 2024, accounting for about 70% of the world's 114.13 GW net increase. Its wind capacity rose from 441.89 GW to 521.75 GW.

Which country recorded the largest decline in 2024?

Kazakhstan recorded the largest decline among reported country pairs, falling from 1.44 GW in 2023 to 1.41 GW in 2024, a decrease of 0.029 GW, or about 2.0%.

How should empty cells be read?

Empty means no reported value in the source. It is different from 0, which means the source reports zero.
