Zinc Production by Country

Zinc production by country shows how much zinc is mined in each country, measured in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production in terms of zinc content. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2020-2024), built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table covers 56 countries included in the underlying data during the period. USGS reports 2025 estimates for 10 countries, which produced a combined 10,540,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 2,000,000 tonnes, this totals 12,540,000 tonnes, below the reported World total of 13,000,000 tonnes in the source, leaving a difference of 460,000 tonnes. The remaining countries retain their latest available figures from the earlier series, with most of these values from 2023.

Largest Zinc-Producing Countries in 2025

China produced the most zinc in 2025 with 4,100,000 tonnes. Peru ranked second with 1,500,000, followed by Australia (1,100,000), India (870,000), Mexico (780,000), the United States (670,000), Bolivia (500,000), Russia (430,000), Kazakhstan (360,000), and Sweden (230,000).

China alone accounted for about 32 percent of the World total in 2025, and China and Peru together for about 43 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 52 percent. China's output was about 2.7 times that of Peru. Three countries exceeded 1 million tonnes in 2025: China, Peru, and Australia.

Zinc Production Around the World

In Asia, China (4,100,000) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (870,000) and Kazakhstan (360,000); North Korea (395,000, 2023), Iran (235,000, 2023), Vietnam (20,000, 2023), and Myanmar (8,800, 2023) retain older values.

In South America, Peru (1,500,000) leads, ahead of Bolivia (500,000) and Brazil (190,928, 2023). In North America, Mexico (780,000) leads, ahead of the United States (670,000) and Canada (99,789, 2023). In Europe, Russia (430,000) is the largest producer, ahead of Sweden (230,000), Türkiye (187,900, 2023), Portugal (184,000, 2023), Spain (89,219, 2023), and Bulgaria (14,195, 2023). In Oceania, Australia (1,100,000) is the only listed producer. In Africa, South Africa (120,000, 2023) leads, ahead of Morocco (33,000, 2023) and Namibia (38,795, 2023).

Largest Changes in Zinc Production, 2024-2025

Peru recorded the largest increase, rising from 1,270,000 tonnes in 2024 to 1,500,000 in 2025 (up 230,000, about 18 percent). Russia rose from 310,000 to 430,000 (up 120,000, about 39 percent), China from 4,000,000 to 4,100,000 (up 100,000, about 2.5 percent), Mexico by 7,000 (about 1 percent), and India by 4,000 (less than 1 percent). Australia (1,100,000) held its level.

The largest decline came from the United States, falling from 759,000 to 670,000 tonnes (down 89,000, about 12 percent). Kazakhstan fell from 375,000 to 360,000 (down 15,000, about 4 percent), Bolivia by 12,000, and Sweden by 9,000.

The World total rose from 11,900,000 to 13,000,000 tonnes (up 1,100,000, about 9.2 percent); the World total is reported separately from the country figures in the source.

Where the earlier series provided a 2024 value, the revisions are visible: Peru was revised down from 1,300,000 to 1,270,000 tonnes, India up from 860,000 to 866,000, the United States up from 750,000 to 759,000, and Mexico up from 700,000 to 773,000.

Methodology

The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national zinc production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series covers 2020-2024. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; countries not reported individually keep their latest available values from the earlier series, mostly from 2023. Values refer to mine production of zinc content, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The sum of individually reported country estimates does not equal the reported World total because the source applies rounding and other adjustments at the country and World levels. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
