Alcohol Consumption by Country

China held 50,568 thousand tonnes of listed alcoholic beverages food supply in 2023, 20.7 percent of a 244,285-thousand-tonne total that shrank in both windows. The single-year fall of 3.0 percent was broad, with Brazil, the United States, China, Vietnam and Mexico all declining while India added 9.0 percent. Over five years the total edged down 0.9 percent as India's and Uganda's gains offset falls in China, Vietnam and Brazil. Botswana leads per person at 184.06 kilograms per person per year.

Alcohol Consumption

China leads at 50,568 thousand tonnes, 1.78 times the United States at 28,388, with Brazil third at 15,701 and Russia fourth at 10,777. Per capita the order is European and African: Botswana at 184.06 kilograms from 457 thousand tonnes, then Luxembourg at 167.35 and the Czech Republic at 163.06 kilograms. China, first by total, records 35.55 kilograms per person.

Alcoholic Beverages Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed alcoholic beverages food supply in 2023 at 50,568 thousand tonnes.
  • The United States ranked second at 28,388 thousand tonnes, followed by Brazil at 15,701 thousand tonnes.
  • Botswana had the highest per-capita food supply at 184.06 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 244,285 thousand tonnes across 175 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 174 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed alcoholic beverages food supply decreased by 2,214 thousand tonnes, or 0.9 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually consumed.

Key Takeaways

The alcoholic beverages aggregate covers the beverage items in the FAO Food Balances classification recorded as food, principally wine, beer, fermented beverages and other alcoholic beverages. Alcohol recorded for non-food uses sits outside this total.

The single-year decline was shared across the largest reporters, with five of the top six falling. The five-year picture is flatter because India's rise of 1,102 thousand tonnes and Uganda's of 1,002 partly offset the combined falls of China, Vietnam and Brazil.

China Holds 20.7 Percent of a Shrinking 244,285-Thousand-Tonne Table

The 2023 table is led by China at 50,568 thousand tonnes, with the United States second at 28,388 and Brazil third at 15,701. Russia and Germany complete the top five at 10,777 and 9,618 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 20.7 percent of the 244,285-thousand-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 38.7 percent of the listed total, the top five 47.1 percent and the top ten 60.2 percent. Per capita, Botswana's 184.06 kilograms per person per year from 457 thousand tonnes lead Luxembourg at 167.35 kilograms, while India, eighth by total, records 4.18 kilograms.

Brazil Leads Broad Declines in a 3.0 Percent Annual Fall

Among the 175 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 251,785 thousand tonnes to 244,285 thousand tonnes, a decline of 7,500 thousand tonnes (3.0 percent). The two years share the same 175 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Brazil fell 1,731 thousand tonnes (down 9.9 percent), the United States fell 1,152 thousand tonnes (down 3.9 percent), China fell 1,056 thousand tonnes (down 2.0 percent), Vietnam fell 803 thousand tonnes (down 19.3 percent), Mexico fell 776 thousand tonnes (down 8.4 percent), Australia fell 443 thousand tonnes (down 15.5 percent) and South Korea fell 357 thousand tonnes (down 10.3 percent), while India added 497 thousand tonnes (up 9.0 percent).

India's gain runs against the broad decline: among the eight largest absolute movers, it is the only one that grew. Five of the top six reporters by total declined, so the 3.0 percent fall describes a broad retreat rather than a single country's movement.

India and Uganda Offset China, Vietnam and Brazil in a 0.9 Percent Five-Year Dip

For the 174 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 246,499 thousand tonnes to 244,285 thousand tonnes, a decline of 2,214 thousand tonnes (0.9 percent). The 2019 total includes 175 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 175; Cuba, with 295 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, and the United Arab Emirates entered with a reported 2023 value of zero. China fell 2,112 thousand tonnes (down 4.0 percent), Vietnam fell 1,536 thousand tonnes (down 31.4 percent), Brazil fell 1,100 thousand tonnes (down 6.5 percent), Mexico fell 621 thousand tonnes (down 6.8 percent) and the Philippines fell 491 thousand tonnes (down 16.7 percent), while India added 1,102 thousand tonnes (up 22.5 percent), Uganda added 1,002 thousand tonnes (up 47.4 percent) and Russia added 603 thousand tonnes (up 5.9 percent).

Uganda's climb from 2,115 to 3,117 thousand tonnes and India's from 4,907 to 6,009 are the two largest absolute gains in the window. Vietnam's fall from 4,886 to 3,350 thousand tonnes (down 31.4 percent) is the steepest proportional decline among the five largest absolute declines highlighted above.

What Does the Alcoholic Beverages Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Alcoholic Beverages item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined beverages total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually consumed. The aggregate sums wine, beer, fermented beverages and other alcoholic beverages recorded as food; alcohol recorded for non-food uses is treated separately.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why alcoholic beverages look concentrated in populous countries by total but in Botswana and small European reporters per person.

Alcohol Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed alcoholic beverages food supply among the 175 reporters with reported values, at 50,568 thousand tonnes. The United States ranked second at 28,388 thousand tonnes, while Brazil ranked third at 15,701 thousand tonnes. Botswana had the highest per-capita alcoholic beverages food supply at 184.06 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of alcoholic beverages actually consumed.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Alcoholic Beverages from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually consumed, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 176 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 244,285 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 175 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the alcoholic beverages aggregate; wine, beer and other beverage items are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the alcoholic beverages total fall in both windows?

The listed supply fell from 251,785 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 244,285 in 2023, a 3.0 percent decline shared across the largest reporters, and from 246,499 in 2019 to 244,285 in 2023, a 0.9 percent decline. India and Uganda gained in the five-year window, but not by enough to offset the combined falls of China, Vietnam and Brazil.

Why is Botswana the per-capita leader for alcoholic beverages?

Botswana's listed supply was 457 thousand tonnes in 2023, modest in volume terms, but its per-capita figure reached 184.06 kilograms per person per year, ahead of Luxembourg at 167.35 kilograms. Total quantity and per-capita supply answer different questions.

Is the food supply of alcoholic beverages the same as alcohol consumed?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually consumed, because beverages can be lost or wasted after they become available to consumers.
