Alcoholic Beverages Consumption by Country

In 2023, China held 11,223 thousand tonnes of listed alcohol food supply, 44.0 percent of a 25,499-thousand-tonne total spread across 172 reporters. Estonia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 20.99 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Almost all of the five-year growth came from elsewhere: the United States and India added a combined 1,214 thousand tonnes since 2019 while China added just 140.

Alcoholic Beverages Consumption

China"s 11,223 thousand tonnes tower over India"s 3,079, but the per-capita crown sits in Estonia at 20.99 kilograms per person per year from 29 thousand tonnes. The Bahamas follows at 18.76 kilograms, and the whole per-capita top ten reads like an Eastern European and island list rather than a ranking of the volume leaders.

Alcoholic Beverages Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed alcoholic beverages food supply in 2023 at 11,223 thousand tonnes.
  • India ranked second at 3,079 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 1,557 thousand tonnes.
  • Estonia had the highest per-capita food supply at 20.99 kilograms per person per year.
  • The 2023 listed total was 25,499 thousand tonnes across 172 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 172 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed alcoholic beverages food supply increased by 1,946 thousand tonnes, or 8.3 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount of alcohol actually drunk.

Key Takeaways

The central tension in this table is concentration without momentum. China owns 44.0 percent of supply but contributed almost nothing to five-year growth, while the United States and India delivered nearly two-thirds of it from a quarter of the total between them. The per-capita ranking tells a third story, led by Estonia at 20.99 kilograms against China's 7.89.

The year 2023 broke with the previous four. China fell 1,003 thousand tonnes in a single year, wiping out nearly all of its gains since 2019 and leaving a net five-year increase of just 140 thousand tonnes, while the United Kingdom tripled from 68 to 230 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of alcohol consumption.

Alcoholic Beverages Consumption by Country in 2023

China owns nearly half the 2023 table at 11,223 thousand tonnes, with India next at 3,079 and the United States at 1,557. Russia and Thailand round out the top five at 1,287 and 844 thousand tonnes. The most volatile line belongs to the United Kingdom, which tripled from 68 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 230 thousand tonnes in 2023.

The top three reporters accounted for 62.2 percent of the 25,499-thousand-tonne listed total, while the top five represented 70.6 percent and the top ten 81.3 percent. Below the giants the table spreads wide: no other reporter reaches 1,000 thousand tonnes except Russia and Thailand, and the per-capita order reverses almost everything, crowning Estonia at 20.99 kilograms.

2023 Breaks the Trend: China Falls While the United Kingdom Triples

Among the 172 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply slipped from 26,608 thousand tonnes to 25,499 thousand tonnes, a decline of 1,109 thousand tonnes (4.2 percent). China's 1,003-thousand-tonne drop explains nearly the whole 1,109-thousand-tonne net decline, with South Korea, South Africa, Thailand and Australia falling alongside. Against that tide, the United Kingdom's jump from 68 to 230 thousand tonnes stands out, joined by smaller gains in India and Russia.

Two Countries, Two-Thirds of Five Years of Growth

For the 172 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 23,553 thousand tonnes to 25,499 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,946 thousand tonnes (8.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 173 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 172; Cuba, with 207 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value.

Strip out China and the five-year story belongs to two reporters. The United States added 656 thousand tonnes (up 72.8 percent) and India 558 thousand tonnes (up 22.1 percent), together 1,214 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 1,946. South Africa, the United Kingdom and Brazil added smaller but real increments of 201, 156 and 141 thousand tonnes, while China managed just 140 thousand tonnes (up 1.3 percent) and Germany and Mexico fell 136 and 105 thousand tonnes.

What changed between the windows is who carried the weight. From 2019 to 2023 the gains spread across several reporters, but in 2023 alone almost everything netted through China's single decline. Per capita, Estonia's 20.99 kilograms from 29 thousand tonnes lead the Bahamas at 18.76 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 7.89 kilograms.

What Does the Alcoholic Beverages Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Beverages, Alcoholic recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of alcohol people actually drank. Wine, beer and fermented beverages recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. This distinction is important when comparing alcohol consumption by country, because the FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption rather than the amount of alcohol actually consumed.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Alcoholic Beverages Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed alcoholic beverages food supply among the 172 reporters with reported values, at 11,223 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 3,079 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 1,557 thousand tonnes. Estonia had the highest per-capita alcoholic beverages food supply at 20.99 kilograms per person per year. These figures describe listed alcoholic beverages food supply and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of alcohol consumption.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Beverages, Alcoholic from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually drunk, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 173 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 25,499 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 172 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the United Kingdom's alcohol food supply triple in one year?

The United Kingdom rose from 68 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 230 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 162 thousand tonnes (up 238.2 percent). The FAO Food Balances data show the movement but do not establish its cause.

How can Estonia lead per capita with 29 thousand tonnes?

Estonia recorded 20.99 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 29 thousand tonnes. Small populations produce high per-capita values from modest totals; the Bahamas followed at 18.76 kilograms, while China, first by total, recorded 7.89 kilograms.

Is the food supply of alcoholic beverages the same as alcohol actually drunk?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually drank, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
