Barley and Products Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data show that China had the largest listed food supply of barley and products in 2023, at 2,325 thousand tonnes, followed by Ethiopia at 1,888 thousand tonnes and the United States at 1,277 thousand tonnes. North Macedonia had the highest per-capita food supply at 33.33 kilograms per person. The data cover 146 reporters and include annual figures from 2019 through 2023.
China had the highest listed barley and products food supply in 2023 at 2,325 thousand tonnes, while North Macedonia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 33.33 kilograms per person. China's listed quantity was 1.23 times Ethiopia's 1,888 thousand tonnes, and the ten largest reporters accounted for 81.2 percent of the 10,908-thousand-tonne listed total. China, Ethiopia and the United States were the three largest reporters by quantity in 2023, with 2,325, 1,888 and 1,277 thousand tonnes respectively. India followed with 1,113 thousand tonnes, while Morocco recorded 950 thousand tonnes. On a per-capita basis, North Macedonia led with 33.33 kilograms per person, followed by Iceland at 32.46 kilograms. Among the 144 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased by 1,981 thousand tonnes, or 22.2 percent. China accounted for 783 thousand tonnes of the increase and the United States for another 629 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of barley or barley products actually eaten. China had the largest listed food supply of barley and products in the 2023 data with 2,325 thousand tonnes (21.3 percent of the listed total), followed by Ethiopia with 1,888 thousand tonnes (17.3 percent) and the United States with 1,277 thousand tonnes (11.7 percent). India ranked fourth with 1,113 thousand tonnes and Morocco fifth with 950 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters hold 50.3 percent of the listed 2023 total, the top five 69.2 percent and the top ten 81.2 percent of the 10,908-thousand-tonne total. Among the 144 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 8,927 thousand tonnes to 10,908 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,981 thousand tonnes (22.2 percent). China added 783 thousand tonnes (up 50.8 percent), accounting for 39.5 percent of the increase, followed by the United States with 629 thousand tonnes (up 97.1 percent), India with 343 thousand tonnes (up 44.5 percent) and Ethiopia with 230 thousand tonnes (up 13.9 percent). Spain added 209 thousand tonnes, rising from 42 to 251 thousand tonnes (up 497.6 percent). Colombia recorded the largest decline among the countries highlighted here, falling by 96 thousand tonnes (down 60.4 percent), followed by Ukraine with a decline of 81 thousand tonnes (down 39.5 percent) and Morocco with a decline of 72 thousand tonnes (down 7.0 percent). For the 142 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 9,393 thousand tonnes to 10,903 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,510 thousand tonnes (16.1 percent). The annual listed totals across all reporters were 9,393 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 10,908 thousand tonnes in 2023; these totals differ from the common-reporter calculation because not every reporter had data in both endpoint years. The United States recorded the largest increase among the countries highlighted, rising by 1,180 thousand tonnes from 97 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 1,277 thousand tonnes in 2023 (up 1,216.5 percent). China added 696 thousand tonnes (up 42.7 percent), while Spain added 216 thousand tonnes, rising from 35 to 251 thousand tonnes (up 617.1 percent). Algeria fell by 253 thousand tonnes (down 39.2 percent), while Thailand declined by 183 thousand tonnes (down 71.8 percent), Iraq by 138 thousand tonnes (down 86.2 percent), India by 132 thousand tonnes (down 10.6 percent) and Poland by 131 thousand tonnes (down 53.3 percent). The United States and China together added more than the net increase across the common reporter universe, while declines in several other countries reduced the overall gain. Per-capita values also differed substantially from total quantities: Iceland recorded 32.46 kilograms per person and Morocco 25.19 kilograms, compared with 1.63 kilograms for China and 14.67 kilograms for Ethiopia. In 2023, China had the largest listed food supply of barley and products at 2,325 thousand tonnes, while North Macedonia had the highest per-capita food supply at 33.33 kilograms per person per year. FAO Food Balances data cover 146 reporters for this comparison and measure food available for human consumption rather than the amount actually eaten. In this dataset, barley and products consumption refers to the quantity classified as food in the FAO Food Balances. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than the amount people actually eat. The item includes barley and products derived from it, while other commodities and processed products are recorded according to their respective FAO items. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, China had the largest listed barley and products food supply among the 144 reporters with reported values, at 2,325 thousand tonnes. Ethiopia ranked second at 1,888 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 1,277 thousand tonnes. North Macedonia had the highest per-capita barley and products food supply at 33.33 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of barley actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Barley and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. The reporter universe contains 146 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimal places. FAO Food Balances are compiled from national and other official sources. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year.Key Takeaways

Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the United States increase so sharply between 2019 and 2023?
The United States rose from 97 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 1,277 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 1,180 thousand tonnes. Because the 2019 base was small, this corresponds to a 1,216.5 percent increase.
Which country had the highest barley and products food supply per person in 2023?
North Macedonia recorded the highest per-capita food supply in the listed 2023 data at 33.33 kilograms per person. Its total listed quantity was 61 thousand tonnes.
Does barley and products consumption mean the amount people actually ate?
No. The FAO Food element represents food available for human consumption in the food balance. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, because food can be lost or wasted after reaching the consumer.
