Beans Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data record 19,686 thousand tonnes of listed beans food supply in 2023 across 162 reporters with reported values. India accounts for 5,720 thousand tonnes of that total, ahead of Brazil at 2,604 thousand tonnes and Tanzania at 1,053 thousand tonnes. Rwanda records the highest per-capita food supply at 30.81 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
India leads the 2023 ranking at 5,720 thousand tonnes, 2.20 times Brazil at 2,604 thousand tonnes, while Rwanda's 30.81 kilograms per person per year top the per-capita ranking from 430 thousand tonnes. The top ten reporters hold 70.3 percent of the listed total. In 2023, India led listed beans food supply at 5,720 thousand tonnes, with Brazil second at 2,604 thousand tonnes and Tanzania third at 1,053 thousand tonnes. Mexico followed at 939 thousand tonnes and Uganda at 763 thousand tonnes after more than doubling since 2019. Rwanda's 30.81 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by El Salvador at 19.76 kilograms. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 162 reporters with data in both years eased from 20,092 thousand tonnes to 19,686 thousand tonnes, a decline of 406 thousand tonnes (2.0 percent), as falls in India and the United States outweighed gains in Uganda, Tanzania, Argentina, Indonesia and Kazakhstan. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 12.6 percent on broad gains across Africa, Asia and the Americas. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of beans actually eaten. India holds 5,720 thousand tonnes, or 29.1 percent of the 19,686-thousand-tonne listed total. Brazil follows at 2,604 thousand tonnes (13.2 percent) and Tanzania at 1,053 thousand tonnes (5.3 percent), with Mexico fourth at 939 thousand tonnes and Uganda fifth at 763 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters hold 47.6 percent of the listed total, the top five 56.3 percent and the top ten 70.3 percent. East Africa is strongly represented, with Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Ethiopia all in the top ten. Among the 162 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply moved from 20,092 thousand tonnes to 19,686 thousand tonnes, a decline of 406 thousand tonnes (2.0 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 162 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India fell 471 thousand tonnes (down 7.6 percent) and the United States fell 266 thousand tonnes (down 27.1 percent), while Uganda added 180 thousand tonnes (up 30.9 percent), Tanzania added 71 thousand tonnes (up 7.2 percent), Argentina added 63 thousand tonnes (up 33.2 percent), Indonesia added 51 thousand tonnes (up 27.3 percent) and Kazakhstan added 50 thousand tonnes (up 20.0 percent). China fell 37 thousand tonnes (down 7.6 percent). For the 161 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 17,485 thousand tonnes to 19,686 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,201 thousand tonnes (12.6 percent). The 2019 total includes 162 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 162; Cuba, with 136 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Nauru entered with a reported zero. India added 554 thousand tonnes (up 10.7 percent), Uganda added 437 thousand tonnes (up 134.0 percent), Kazakhstan added 203 thousand tonnes (up 209.3 percent), China added 164 thousand tonnes (up 56.9 percent), Argentina added 158 thousand tonnes (up 166.3 percent), Ethiopia and Tanzania each added 120 thousand tonnes (up 41.2 and 12.9 percent respectively) and the United States added 114 thousand tonnes (up 18.9 percent). No single country dominates the five-year growth: India contributes 25.2 percent of the net increase and Uganda 19.9 percent, with Kazakhstan, China, Argentina, Ethiopia, Tanzania and the United States each adding between 114 and 203 thousand tonnes. Per capita, Rwanda's 30.81 kilograms from 430 thousand tonnes lead a ranking where El Salvador is second at 19.76 kilograms, while India, first by total, records 3.98 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the beans figure used here is the amount of dry beans recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much beans people actually consumed. Green beans and other vegetables recorded under their own items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, India had the largest listed beans food supply among the 162 reporters with reported values, at 5,720 thousand tonnes. Brazil ranked second at 2,604 thousand tonnes, while Tanzania ranked third at 1,053 thousand tonnes. Rwanda had the highest per-capita beans food supply at 30.81 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of beans actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Beans from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. The reporter universe contains 163 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 19,686 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 162 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Beans Food Supply at a Glance

Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the largest beans food supply?
India had the largest listed beans food supply in 2023 with 5,720 thousand tonnes, which is 2.20 times Brazil's 2,604 thousand tonnes. India's share of the 19,686-thousand-tonne listed total was 29.1 percent.
Why did beans supply fall between 2022 and 2023 while rising since 2019?
Listed supply fell 406 thousand tonnes (down 2.0 percent) in the last year as India and the United States declined by a combined 737 thousand tonnes. Since 2019 it has risen 2,201 thousand tonnes (up 12.6 percent) on broad gains led by India, Uganda and Kazakhstan.
Is beans food supply the same as beans eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
