Broad Beans Green Consumption by Country
Algeria had the largest reported food supply of green broad beans in 2023, at 286,395 tonnes, accounting for 20.7 percent of the listed total. Egypt ranked second at 154,373 tonnes, followed by China at 103,750 tonnes. Tunisia had the highest per-person food supply, at 17.83 grams per person per day. Egypt's reported supply more than tripled between 2019 and 2023, while Latvia's fell from 16,123 tonnes to zero. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
Key Findings. Algeria ranked first in total green broad bean food supply in 2023, with 286,395 tonnes, followed by Egypt and China. Tunisia ranked first in food supply per person, at 17.83 grams per person per day, despite placing fourth by total volume. Across 133 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, combined supply increased by 46,479 tonnes. Egypt accounted for a gain of 108,850 tonnes over that period. The figures represent food available for human consumption, rather than the amount actually eaten. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population.
Algeria Leads Total Supply
Algeria led, 1.86 times Egypt by reported volume. China sat third at 103,750 tonnes, ahead of Tunisia at 79,407 and Taiwan at 67,578. The top three held 39.4 percent of the 1,381,871-tonne total, and the top five 50.0 percent. Peru, Morocco, Syria, the United States and Poland closed the top ten between 36,812 and 67,134 tonnes. Of 145 countries in the file, 140 carried a 2023 value.
Across the 138 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 1.9 percent, from 1,355,841 tonnes, a gain of 26,012. Algeria added 24,775 tonnes, up 9.5 percent, nearly all of the net rise. Egypt added 21,712 tonnes, up 16.4 percent. Iraq shed 10,806 tonnes, down 28.9 percent. Spain shed 7,864 tonnes, down 42.2 percent. Mexico added 7,403 tonnes, up 38.3 percent, while France added 7,090 and Peru shed 5,770. Italy shed 5,192 tonnes, down 14.4 percent. Sierra Leone and South Korea first reported values in 2023, adding 18 tonnes. Among the 133 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 3.5 percent, from 1,334,616 tonnes, a gain of 46,479. Egypt added 108,850 tonnes from 45,523, more than tripling, over twice the net rise. Poland added 25,063 tonnes, tripling from 11,749. The United Kingdom added 20,084 tonnes, doubling from 15,777. Morocco shed 19,210 tonnes, down 24.8 percent. Latvia fell to zero from 16,123 tonnes. Italy shed 12,614 tonnes over five years, down 29.0 percent. Five countries with 166 tonnes in 2019 were absent from the comparison, while seven additional countries contributed 777 tonnes to the 2023 total. Tunisia ranked fourth at 79,407 tonnes. Taiwan, fifth at 67,578 tonnes, ranked third per person at 7.94 grams. Morocco, seventh at 58,379 tonnes, shed 19,210 over five years. Syria, eighth at 49,490 tonnes, reported 5.75 grams per person. Peru ranked sixth at 67,134 tonnes and fifth per person at 5.43 grams. The United States, ninth at 45,144 tonnes, sits outside the per-person top ten. Poland closed the top ten at 36,812 tonnes, adding 25,063 over five years, tripling from 11,749. Tunisia's 17.83 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Algeria at 17.00 and Taiwan at 7.94. Bolivia followed at 7.40 grams and Libya at 7.01. Syria reported 5.75 grams after ranking eighth by volume. Peru, sixth at 67,134 tonnes, reported 5.43 grams per person. For broad beans, green, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 145 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 140 carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption.
