Ethiopia ranked fifth in reported beehive stocks in 2024, with 6,710,019 hives, after adding 441,856 hives during the year. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for the item Bees from 2020 to 2024, with stocks reported in hives. The table includes 116 countries, of which 98 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed total is 83,918,202 hives. Countries are ordered from the largest reported number of hives to the smallest.

In 2024, India reported the largest number of beehives in this dataset with 12,649,433 hives, followed by China with 9,362,193 and Türkiye with 8,961,975. The 98 countries reporting a 2024 quantity had a combined listed total of 83,918,202 hives.

India reported 1.35 times as many hives as China: 12,649,433 compared with 9,362,193. Türkiye ranked third with 8,961,975 hives, 400,218 fewer than China, while Iran ranked fourth with 7,259,700. India and China together accounted for 26.2 percent of the listed 2024 total, while the top three accounted for 36.9 percent.

Bee Population by Country in 2024

India reported the largest number of hives in the 2024 listed data, with 12,649,433 hives, followed by China with 9,362,193 and Türkiye with 8,961,975. Iran ranked fourth with 7,259,700 hives.

India accounted for 15.1 percent of the listed 2024 total. The top three countries together accounted for 36.9 percent of the 83,918,202-hive listed total.

Beehive Stocks Rise 0.8 Percent from 2023 to 2024

Among the 98 countries reporting in both years, combined beehive stocks increased from 83,239,572 hives in 2023 to 83,918,202 in 2024, a gain of 678,630 hives (0.8 percent). The full listed total was higher in 2023 at 100,675,964 hives because 17 countries that reported in 2023 did not report a 2024 quantity. Spain had the largest of these missing 2024 reports at 2,804,000 hives. Ethiopia added 441,856 hives (7.0 percent), while Türkiye decreased by 262,906 (2.8 percent) and Kenya increased by 189,757 (11.3 percent).

Beehive Stocks Increase 2.4 Percent in the Same 96-Country Comparison

For the 96 countries reporting in both 2020 and 2024, combined beehive stocks increased from 81,936,962 hives to 83,911,297, a gain of 1,974,335 hives (2.4 percent). The full 2024 listed total is slightly higher at 83,918,202 hives because Qatar and Vanuatu reported 6,754 and 151 hives respectively in 2024 but had no 2020 quantity. Eighteen countries that reported in 2020 had no 2024 quantity; Spain had the largest of these missing reports at 3,102,113 hives. Türkiye added 782,890 hives (9.6 percent), Kenya added 439,868 (30.8 percent), and India added 407,275 (3.3 percent).

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals sum FAO Crops and Livestock Products stocks quantity (Element 5114) for item Bees, 2020-2024. For beehive stocks, quantities are shown as whole hives. The 2024 beehive stocks ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities. In the beehive stocks data, zero means a reported nil or negligible stock; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For beehive stocks changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. The data measure the number of hives rather than the number of individual bees, and they represent stocks rather than a production flow.
