Beer Consumption by Country
In 2023, China held 33,708 thousand tonnes of listed beer food supply, nearly a fifth of a 174,828-thousand-tonne total spread across 173 reporters. The year belonged to the fallers: Brazil, the United States, Mexico and Vietnam each dropped between 749 and 1,778 thousand tonnes. Botswana recorded the highest per-capita figure at 167.02 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
China's 33,708 thousand tonnes look modest next to the per-capita table, which belongs to Botswana at 167.02 kilograms from 414 thousand tonnes, then the Czech Republic at 134.66. Germany, Poland and Spain appear on both lists; almost everyone else trades places completely. Everyone lost last year except two reporters. Brazil, the United States, Mexico, Vietnam, Germany and the United Kingdom all fell by hundreds of thousands of tonnes, while only India and Russia added anything worth naming. The year before that looked the same: China, Vietnam, Brazil and the United States account for nearly all of the five-year decline. Botswana breaks every scale in the table. Its 414 thousand tonnes sits 52nd by volume, yet divide by its population and it laps the Czech Republic at 167.02 kilograms against 134.66. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of beer actually drunk. Read the 2023 table from the bottom up and Cameroon jumps out: 4 thousand tonnes where 604 stood in 2019, a 99.3 percent collapse that still leaves the country in the dataset. At the top, China's 33,708 thousand tonnes need the United States and Brazil combined to surpass it. The middle holds steady hands, Russia at 8,582, Mexico at 8,325 and Germany at 7,606. Concentration reads 41.4 percent for the top three and 63.8 for the top ten, ordinary numbers for a table whose real story is who fell, not who leads. Among the 173 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply fell from 179,827 thousand tonnes to 174,828 thousand tonnes, a decline of 4,999 thousand tonnes (2.8 percent). Count the directions: six of the eight largest moves fall, Brazil down 1,778 thousand tonnes (10.7 percent), the United States down 1,013, Mexico down 795, Vietnam down 749, Germany down 330 and the United Kingdom down 317. Only India (up 387) and Russia (up 234) lean the other way. For the 172 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 180,525 thousand tonnes to 174,828 thousand tonnes, a decline of 5,697 thousand tonnes (3.2 percent). The 2019 total includes 174 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 173; Cuba and Kuwait, with a combined 72 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while the United Arab Emirates entered with a reported zero. Four reporters own the drop: China down 2,140 thousand tonnes (6.0 percent), Vietnam down 1,496 (33.0 percent), Brazil down 1,246 (7.8 percent) and the United States down 1,010 (4.1 percent). Together they subtract 5,892 thousand tonnes, more than the net decline, with Russia's 839-thousand-tonne gain the only large offset. Cameroon's fall from 604 to 4 thousand tonnes reads 99.3 percent but moves almost nothing in absolute terms. Per capita, Botswana's 167.02 kilograms from 414 thousand tonnes lead the Czech Republic at 134.66 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 23.69 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Beer recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of beer people actually drank. Other alcoholic beverages recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed beer food supply among the 173 reporters with reported values, at 33,708 thousand tonnes. The United States ranked second at 23,790 thousand tonnes, while Brazil ranked third at 14,815 thousand tonnes. Botswana had the highest per-capita beer food supply at 167.02 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of beer actually drunk. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Beer from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually drunk, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 175 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 174,828 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 173 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Beer Food Supply at a Glance

Beer Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which four reporters own the five-year drop?
China, Vietnam, Brazil and the United States subtract a combined 5,892 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, more than the 5,697-thousand-tonne net decline. Russia's 839-thousand-tonne gain is the only large offset.
How did Cameroon fall 99.3 percent and stay in the table?
Cameroon fell from 604 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 4 thousand tonnes in 2023. A reported 4 thousand tonnes still counts as a value, so Cameroon sits inside both comparison windows instead of exiting with Cuba and Kuwait.
Is the food supply of beer the same as beer actually drunk?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually drank, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
