Biofuels Consumption by Country
Biofuels consumption by country measures total biofuels consumed for each country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. As with production, the total covers fuel ethanol and biomass-based diesel together. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 78 countries, with 72 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 157.6238 Mmt in 2024, up from 145.6600 Mmt in 2023.
The United States (59.2973 Mmt) remains the largest reported consumer, but the story of 2024 belongs to Brazil (36.6101 Mmt), whose surge reshaped the year. Indonesia (11.0344 Mmt) ranks third, with India (5.1046 Mmt) just ahead of Canada (5.0615 Mmt) in a close race for fourth. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 37.6% of the reported world total in 2024, consuming about 1.6 times as much as Brazil. The top two together held about 60.9%, the top three about 67.9%, the top five about 74.3%, and the top ten about 85.4%. Brazil's consumption jumped from 29.0880 to 36.6101 Mmt (+7.5221 Mmt, about 25.9%), the largest reported increase in any biofuels series for 2024. The world total rose from 145.6600 to 157.6238 Mmt (+11.9638 Mmt, about 8.2%), so Brazil alone accounted for about 63% of the world increase. The largest decline among reported pairs was France, slipping from 4.2096 to 3.9461 Mmt (-0.2635 Mmt, about 6.3%). The top ten split in half. The United States (+4.0671 Mmt, +7.4%), Brazil (+25.9%), Indonesia (+2.9%), Canada (+12.5%) and China (+17.3%) all grew, while France, Germany, the United Kingdom, India and Thailand all declined. The European consumers in the top ten all declined: France (-6.3%), Germany (-6.0%) and the United Kingdom (-5.1%). Reported world values were 128.6043 Mmt in 2019, 120.5343 Mmt in 2020, 128.7275 Mmt in 2021, 136.1784 Mmt in 2022, 145.6600 Mmt in 2023 and 157.6238 Mmt in 2024. Consumption ended about 22.6% above the 2019 level after the 2020 dip, followed by four consecutive years of growth. The figures show the change over time but do not explain its causes. Consumers and producers are mostly the same countries in a different order: the United States consumed 59.2973 Mmt against production of 65.4133 Mmt, while Brazil consumed 36.6101 Mmt against production of 36.5405 Mmt — nearly identical. Canada (5.0615 Mmt) ranks fifth here while sitting eighth in production. As elsewhere in this dataset, many countries have earlier values but no reported 2024 value. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual biofuels consumption in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. Coverage is incomplete in 2024: 72 of the 78 countries have a reported value, while many countries have values for earlier years but no reported 2024 value. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers total biofuels consumption only; fuel ethanol and biomass-based diesel are reported separately in the source.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries consume the most biofuels?
The United States (59.2973 Mmt) and Brazil (36.6101 Mmt) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Indonesia (11.0344 Mmt), India (5.1046 Mmt) and Canada (5.0615 Mmt).
Why did Brazil's consumption jump in 2024?
Brazil rose from 29.0880 Mmt in 2023 to 36.6101 Mmt in 2024 (+7.5221 Mmt, about 25.9%), accounting for about 63% of the world increase. The page reports the numbers; the source does not explain the causes.
Do countries consume what they produce?
Mostly the same countries lead both rankings in a slightly different order. The United States produced 65.4133 Mmt and consumed 59.2973 Mmt in 2024, while Brazil produced 36.5405 Mmt and consumed 36.6101 Mmt.
Why do so few countries report 2024 values?
The table covers 78 countries, but only 72 have a reported 2024 value. Empty cells mean no reported value rather than zero, and many countries report values only for earlier years.
