Nuclear Primary Energy Consumption by Country
Nuclear primary energy consumption by country measures the amount of primary energy attributed to nuclear power consumption in each country, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The series contains reported values for 34 countries, the same 34 countries covered by the production series. In the source’s accounting, nuclear consumption equals nuclear production. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 34 countries, with 34 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 28.3862 quad Btu in 2024, up from 27.5121 quad Btu in 2023.
The United States (8.1650 quad Btu) led in 2024, about 1.8 times China (4.6269 quad Btu). France (3.7413 quad Btu), Russia (2.2831 quad Btu) and South Korea (1.8097 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 28.8% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 45.1%, the top three about 58.2%, the top five about 72.7%, and the top ten about 85.0%. France recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 3.3180 to 3.7413 quad Btu (+0.4233 quad Btu, about 12.8%). The world total rose from 27.5121 to 28.3862 quad Btu (+0.8741 quad Btu, about 3.2%), so France alone accounted for about 48% of the world increase. Germany recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.0685 quad Btu in 2023 to zero in 2024. France (+12.8%), South Korea (+9.4%) and China (+4.0%) grew while the United States (+0.8%) barely moved and Russia (-0.7%) edged down. Canada (-3.3%) and Spain (-4.1%) also declined within the top ten. Reported world values were 27.8785 quad Btu in 2019, 26.9308 quad Btu in 2020, 27.9958 quad Btu in 2021, 26.8855 quad Btu in 2022, 27.5121 quad Btu in 2023 and 28.3862 quad Btu in 2024. Consumption ended about 1.8% above the 2019 level, essentially flat over five years. Consumption mirrors production exactly — the same 34 countries appear in the same order — because the source accounts nuclear consumption as equal to production. France’s increase accounted for nearly half of the world’s growth in 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy consumption from nuclear power in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). The series contains reported values for 34 countries. Countries without a reported value are left empty, while a value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers the EIA’s nuclear primary energy consumption series; other primary energy sources are reported separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries consume the most nuclear energy?
The United States (8.1650 quad Btu), China (4.6269 quad Btu) and France (3.7413 quad Btu) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Russia (2.2831 quad Btu) and South Korea (1.8097 quad Btu).
How much did France’s nuclear energy consumption increase in 2024?
France’s consumption increased from 3.3180 to 3.7413 quad Btu, a gain of 0.4233 quad Btu or about 12.8%. The increase represented about 48% of the world increase.
What was Germany’s nuclear energy consumption in 2024?
Germany reported 0.0685 quad Btu in 2023 and 0 in 2024. Zero means that the source reports zero, not a missing value.
Is consumption the same as production?
Yes. Consumption and production are reported as equal for the same 34 countries: in 2024, the United States consumed 8.1650 quad Btu compared with 8.1650 in production, and France consumed 3.7413 compared with 3.7413 in production.
