Biofuels Production by Country

Biofuels production by country measures total biofuels produced for each country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. Biofuels here are liquid fuels from biomass, principally fuel ethanol and biomass-based diesel, which are reported separately in the source. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 82 countries, with 70 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 159.6036 Mmt in 2024, up from 152.2660 Mmt in 2023.

Biofuels Production by Country Map

Reported 2024 leaders show a clear two-country story. The United States (65.4133 Mmt) produced nearly twice as much as Brazil (36.5405 Mmt), the second-largest producer. Indonesia (11.3854 Mmt) ranked third, followed by China (6.6374 Mmt) and India (5.1503 Mmt). Empty means no reported value, not zero.

The United States accounted for about 41.0% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 63.9%, the top three about 71.0%, the top five about 78.4%, and the top ten about 86.7%. The United States produced about 1.8 times as much as Brazil.

Two producers, then everyone else

The United States and Brazil together reported 101.9538 Mmt, about 63.9% of the world total. Indonesia, China and India complete the top five, but each remains far below the two leaders. Germany (4.2200 Mmt), Thailand (2.4967 Mmt) and Canada (2.3730 Mmt) follow. The long tail of smaller producers keeps the top-ten share at 86.7%, leaving about 13% to the rest of the listed countries.

Change from 2023 to 2024

The United States recorded the largest reported increase, rising from 61.6057 to 65.4133 Mmt (+3.8076 Mmt, about 6.2%). The world total rose from 152.2660 to 159.6036 Mmt (+7.3376 Mmt, about 4.8%), so the United States alone accounted for about half of the world increase. The largest decline among reported pairs was Peru, slipping from 0.3371 to 0.1721 Mmt (-0.1650 Mmt).

How production changed across major producers

India was the only top-five producer to decline, slipping from 5.2285 to 5.1503 Mmt (-1.5%), while the other four all grew. Among the larger producers further down the ranking, Argentina jumped from 1.5550 to 2.1329 Mmt (+37.2%) and Canada from 1.8020 to 2.3730 Mmt (+31.7%). France went the other way, falling from 2.1962 to 2.0392 Mmt (-7.2%).

2019 to 2024 in this series

Reported world values were 132.7377 Mmt in 2019, 124.2762 Mmt in 2020, 131.2542 Mmt in 2021, 138.3149 Mmt in 2022, 152.2660 Mmt in 2023 and 159.6036 Mmt in 2024. The figures show a dip in 2020 followed by four consecutive years of growth, ending about 20.2% above the 2019 level. The data show the change over time but do not explain its causes.

Biofuels in context

Production and consumption do not line up country by country: the United States produced 65.4133 Mmt but consumed 59.2973 Mmt in 2024, while Brazil produced 36.5405 Mmt and consumed 36.6101 Mmt. The ranking therefore reflects where fuel was made, not where it was used. Coverage also thins out in 2024: many listed countries have values for earlier years but no reported 2024 value, so year-to-year comparisons cover only the countries reporting in both years.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual biofuels production in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. Coverage is incomplete in 2024: 70 of the 82 countries have a reported value, while many countries have values for earlier years but no reported 2024 value. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers total biofuels production only; fuel ethanol and biomass-based diesel are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as biofuels here?

Total biofuels produced from biomass, principally fuel ethanol and biomass-based diesel. The two components are reported as separate series alongside this total.

Which countries produce the most biofuels?

The United States (65.4133 Mmt) and Brazil (36.5405 Mmt) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Indonesia (11.3854 Mmt), China (6.6374 Mmt) and India (5.1503 Mmt).

Is biofuels production still growing?

Reported world production rose from 132.7377 Mmt in 2019 to 159.6036 Mmt in 2024, with four consecutive annual increases after the 2020 dip. The page reports the movement; the source does not explain its causes.

Why do so few countries report 2024 values?

The table covers 82 countries, but only 70 have a reported 2024 value. Many countries have values for earlier years and empty 2024 cells, which mean no reported value rather than zero.
