Biomass Capacity by Country
Biomass capacity by country measures installed biomass power plant capacity for each country, in gigawatts (GW). This includes power plants using biomass fuels such as wood, waste and biogas. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 145 countries, with 141 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 180.13 GW in 2024, up from 164.75 GW in 2023.
The United States (39.85 GW) led in 2024, narrowly ahead of China (32.56 GW). Brazil (17.81 GW), India (11.24 GW) and Germany (10.00 GW) completed the top five. The United States accounted for about 22.1% of the world total in 2024, about 1.2 times China. The top two together held about 40.2%, the top three about 50.1%, the top five about 61.9%, and the top ten about 76.0%. The United States recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 29.28 to 39.85 GW (+10.57 GW, about 36.1%). The world total rose from 164.75 to 180.13 GW (+15.38 GW, about 9.3%), meaning the United States supplied about 69% of the net increase. The largest decline among reported country pairs was Thailand, which fell by 0.074 GW, or about 1.6%. The United States (+36.1%) grew by far the fastest among the top five; China (+4.2%), India (+4.5%), Brazil (+1.8%) and Germany (+1.4%) all increased modestly. The United States and China together accounted for about 40.2% of global biomass capacity, compared with about 59.5% of global wind capacity. Thailand's capacity fell by 0.074 GW, or about 1.6%, the largest decline among reported country pairs. Reported world values were 127.63 GW in 2019, 137.03 GW in 2020, 146.80 GW in 2021, 156.68 GW in 2022, 164.75 GW in 2023 and 180.13 GW in 2024. Capacity ended about 41.2% above the 2019 level, with the world total increasing every year. The United States accounted for much of the recent acceleration, rising from 15.72 GW in 2019 to 39.85 GW in 2024. The United States held 22.1% of global biomass capacity in 2024, while the top five countries together accounted for 61.9%. That is a less concentrated distribution than the wind and solar rankings, where the leading countries hold much larger shares of global capacity. Biomass projects can use locally available materials such as wood, agricultural residues and waste, giving the technology a different geographic pattern from wind and solar. The ranking reflects installed plants, not electricity generated. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual installed biomass capacity in gigawatts (GW). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers biomass capacity only; other sources and generation are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries have the most biomass capacity?
The United States (39.85 GW) had the largest biomass capacity in 2024, followed by China (32.56 GW), Brazil (17.81 GW), India (11.24 GW) and Germany (10.00 GW).
How much did U.S. biomass capacity increase in 2024?
U.S. biomass capacity increased from 29.28 GW in 2023 to 39.85 GW in 2024, an increase of 10.57 GW, or about 36.1%. This accounted for about 69% of the world's 15.38 GW net increase.
How concentrated is global biomass capacity?
The United States held 22.1% of global biomass capacity in 2024, while the top five countries together accounted for 61.9%. The distribution was less concentrated than for wind and solar capacity.
How should empty cells be read?
Empty means no reported value in the source. It is different from 0, which means the source reports zero.
