Biomass-based Diesel Consumption by Country
Biomass-based diesel consumption by country measures biomass-based diesel consumed for each country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. This is the diesel-range biofuel used in road freight and other diesel applications, separate from fuel ethanol. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 61 countries, with 56 reported 2024 values — the thinnest 2024 coverage among the biofuels series — and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 60.9567 Mmt in 2024, up from 56.3628 Mmt in 2023.
The United States (16.6876 Mmt) stands well clear of Indonesia (11.0305 Mmt) and Brazil (7.7476 Mmt). France (2.6113 Mmt) and Germany (2.3491 Mmt) lead a strong European group that also includes Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Italy in the top ten. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 27.4% of the reported world total in 2024, consuming about 1.5 times as much as Indonesia. The top two together held about 45.5%, the top three about 58.2%, the top five about 66.3%, and the top ten about 79.6%. Six of the top ten consumers are European countries. United States consumption surged from 12.6662 to 16.6876 Mmt (+4.0214 Mmt, about 31.7%), the largest increase among the major consumers in this series. The world total rose from 56.3628 to 60.9567 Mmt (+4.5939 Mmt, about 8.2%), so the United States alone accounted for about 88% of the world increase. France recorded the largest decline among reported pairs, falling from 2.9258 to 2.6113 Mmt (-0.3145 Mmt, about 10.7%). Reported world consumption increased in every year, including 2020, and ended about 46.2% above the 2019 level, the fastest growth of the six biofuels series. The figures show the change over time but do not explain its causes. The major growth came from outside Europe. The United States (+31.7%), Brazil (+18.0%), Indonesia (+2.9%) and Canada (+51.8%) all grew, while every European country in the top ten declined: France (-10.7%), Germany (-10.7%), Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Italy each fell by about the same rate. Europe punches above its weight here: France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Italy together consumed 11.1844 Mmt, about 18.3% of the world total, with no other region placing so many countries in the top ten. The United States consumed 16.6876 Mmt against production of 17.2333 Mmt, a near balance. As elsewhere in this dataset, many countries have earlier values but no reported 2024 value — only 56 countries report for 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual biomass-based diesel consumption in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. Coverage is the thinnest among the biofuels series: only 56 of the 61 listed countries have a reported 2024 value, though many more report earlier years. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers biomass-based diesel consumption only; fuel ethanol and total biofuels are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries consume the most biomass-based diesel?
The United States (16.6876 Mmt), Indonesia (11.0305 Mmt) and Brazil (7.7476 Mmt) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by France (2.6113 Mmt) and Germany (2.3491 Mmt).
Why is Europe so visible in this ranking?
France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Italy are all in the 2024 top ten and together consumed 11.1844 Mmt, about 18.3% of the reported world total. The table reports the values; the source does not explain the pattern.
Why did the United States jump so much in 2024?
United States consumption rose from 12.6662 to 16.6876 Mmt (+4.0214 Mmt, about 31.7%), about 88% of the world increase. The page reports the numbers; the source does not explain the causes.
Why do so few countries report 2024 values?
Only 56 of the 61 listed countries have a reported 2024 value, the thinnest coverage among the biofuels series. Empty cells mean no reported value rather than zero, and many countries report values only for earlier years.
