Biomass-based Diesel Production by Country

Biomass-based diesel production by country measures biomass-based diesel produced for each country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. Biomass-based diesel covers diesel-range fuels from biomass, including biodiesel and renewable diesel, and is distinct from fuel ethanol. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 57 countries, with 56 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 62.9804 Mmt in 2024, up from 58.5746 Mmt in 2023.

Biomass-based Diesel Production by Country Map

The leaderboard looks different from ethanol's. The United States (17.2333 Mmt) leads, but Indonesia (11.3807 Mmt) is a strong second and Brazil (7.9790 Mmt) third. Germany (3.6000 Mmt) and China (3.1470 Mmt) complete the top five, with the Netherlands (1.9101 Mmt) and Malaysia (1.5253 Mmt) close behind. Empty means no reported value, not zero.

The United States accounted for about 27.4% of the reported world total in 2024, producing about 1.5 times as much as Indonesia. The top two together held about 45.4%, the top three about 58.1%, the top five about 68.8%, and the top ten about 81.2%. Singapore (1.4007 Mmt) also ranks in the top ten, despite its relatively small geographic size.

Strong growth from 2019 to 2024

Reported world production rose from 43.7781 Mmt in 2019 to 62.9804 Mmt in 2024, an increase of about 43.9% — far above ethanol's 8.6% over the same span. Growth was recorded in every year from 2020 onward. The figures show the change over time but do not explain its causes.

Change from 2023 to 2024

The United States recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 15.2507 to 17.2333 Mmt (+1.9826 Mmt, about 13.0%). The world total rose from 58.5746 to 62.9804 Mmt (+4.4058 Mmt, about 7.5%), so the United States accounted for about 45% of the world increase. The largest decline in absolute terms among reported pairs was France, falling from 1.3081 to 1.0984 Mmt (-0.2097 Mmt, about 16.0%).

How production changed across major producers

Brazil grew the fastest among the top five, rising from 6.6243 to 7.9790 Mmt (+1.3546 Mmt, about 20.4%), while Indonesia added a steadier 0.3502 Mmt (+3.2%). China was the only top-five producer to decline, slipping from 3.2350 to 3.1470 Mmt (-2.7%). Outside the top five, Canada more than doubled from a small base, rising from 0.4470 to 0.9860 Mmt — a reminder that the largest percentage moves often come from the smallest bases.

Biomass-based diesel in context

At 62.9804 Mmt, biomass-based diesel is about two-thirds the size of fuel ethanol (96.6231 Mmt), yet its production is spread far more evenly: the top two hold 45.4% here against 79.4% in ethanol. Five of the top ten producers are in Asia and three in Europe, with only the United States and Brazil outside those regions. Hong Kong has earlier data but no reported 2024 value.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual biomass-based diesel production in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. Coverage for 2024 is nearly complete: 56 of the 57 countries have a reported value, while Hong Kong has no 2024 value. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers biomass-based diesel production only; fuel ethanol and total biofuels are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is biomass-based diesel?

Diesel-range fuel produced from biomass, including biodiesel and renewable diesel. It is reported separately from fuel ethanol.

Which countries produce the most biomass-based diesel?

The United States (17.2333 Mmt), Indonesia (11.3807 Mmt) and Brazil (7.9790 Mmt) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Germany (3.6000 Mmt) and China (3.1470 Mmt).

How fast is biomass-based diesel production growing?

Reported world production rose from 43.7781 Mmt in 2019 to 62.9804 Mmt in 2024, about 43.9%, with increases in every year from 2020 onward. The source does not explain the causes of this growth.

Are all countries reporting 2024 values?

No. The table covers 57 countries, and 56 have a reported 2024 value. Hong Kong has no reported 2024 value. Empty cells mean no reported value rather than zero.
