Brazil Nuts, Shelled Consumption by Country
Brazil had the largest food supply of shelled Brazil nuts in 2023, at 13,360 tonnes, or 34.4 percent of the 38,881-tonne total. The United States ranked second with 4,825 tonnes and the United Kingdom third with 3,236. The Netherlands had the highest supply per person, at 0.2 grams a day. These figures measure food available for human consumption rather than the amount people actually ate, and Brazil's total more than doubled from 5,642 tonnes a year earlier.
Germany took fourth place at 2,303 tonnes and South Korea fifth at 1,364, with the Netherlands sixth (1,318), Poland seventh (1,044), Australia eighth (933.97) and Colombia ninth (932.21). The top three held 55.1 percent of all supply, and Brazil's total was 2.77 times the United States'. On the per-person scale, Belgium and the United Kingdom shared second place. Among the 138 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply rose 8.8 percent, from 35,727 tonnes to 38,881, a gain of 3,154 tonnes. Brazil's 7,718-tonne jump exceeded the entire net rise, so losses elsewhere pulled the total back; the United States dropped 2,197 tonnes, Peru 1,608 and Germany 1,386. Canada shed 762 tonnes and Vietnam 477. Of the 124 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total edged down 3.9 percent, from 40,202 tonnes to 38,637, a loss of 1,565 tonnes. Germany's 2,040-tonne retreat offset 130.3 percent of the net change, with South Korea down 1,032 and France 671. Brazil moved the other way, adding 1,169 tonnes. Twenty-one countries entered and eight left; the newcomers carried 243.70 tonnes in 2023 while the leavers held 2.73 tonnes in 2019. The Netherlands topped the per-person column at 0.20 grams a day, ahead of Brazil at 0.17 and a tie between Belgium and the United Kingdom at 0.13. New Zealand (0.11) came next, with Australia and Ireland level at 0.10. Brazil is the only country in the per-person top three that also ranks in the volume top three. Shelled Brazil nuts form a single FAO item, counted apart from Brazil nuts in shell and from other tree nuts. Each value is a reference-year food supply figure rather than a harvest or a sale, and the grams-per-person column restates that supply for each resident. Peru went from 1,904 tonnes in 2022 to 296.24 in 2023, the steepest fall in the table. South Korea reversed its own slide, from 2,396 tonnes in 2019 to 773.91 in 2022 and back to 1,364. The Netherlands showed the widest split between the measures, sixth by volume but first per person, because its 1,318 tonnes served a small population. Tonnes are FAO's food supply quantity for shelled Brazil nuts, from element 5141, and the grams-per-person-per-day column is element 665; both cover 2019 to 2023. Every change divides by the earlier year, and a zero base yields no percentage. A comparison includes only countries holding a value in both years. A reported zero and a blank cell are different things and are never treated as equals. The figures describe food available for human consumption, with no deduction for household waste or losses, so they do not represent the amount people actually eat. The table holds 147 countries, with World, regions and the China aggregate removed and China kept as one row; 139 carry a 2023 value.
