What Does Centrifugal Raw Sugar Cover?

The FAO item covers raw cane or beet sugar, centrifugal only — crystallized raw sugar, not refined and not non-centrifugal grades, which fall elsewhere. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis.

Centrifugal Raw Sugar Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

Egypt had the largest 2023 listed supply of centrifugal raw sugar at 1,693,960 tonnes, while Panama had the highest per-capita figure at 62.42 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 2,276,632 tonnes across 37 reporters, up 5.3 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten.

Methodology

Thirty-eight reporters with a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 form the file, and the tables list reporters only: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are excluded, with China standing for the China reporter. The earlier endpoint year bases all percentages across reporters present in both years. Zero-base years yield no percentage, and small-base percentages should be read with the base alongside.

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity, element 5141 in tonnes for totals and element 665 in grams per capita per day, tracks centrifugal raw sugar over 2019-2023. The measured quantity is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. Zero reports zero; blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 2,276,632 tonnes sums the 37 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Source: FAO, FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, Raw cane or beet sugar (centrifugal only), food supply quantity (tonnes; g/capita/day), 2019-2023. Compiled by StatsGeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did the Dominican Republic add 251,200 tonnes from zero?

The Dominican Republic reported zero in 2019 and 251,200 tonnes in 2023; a zero is a reported zero, which differs from a blank cell meaning no report. The figures record the arrival, not what caused it.

Why did Egypt dip then rebound?

Egypt reported 1,862,408 tonnes in 2019, 1,500,000 in 2022 and 1,693,960 in 2023. The figures trace the dip and rebound without attributing causes.

What left the table since 2019?

Pakistan's 48,396 tonnes went blank; six small reporters entered with 1,546 tonnes between them. A blank cell means no value was reported.
