Non-Centrifugal Cane Sugar Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record cane sugar, non-centrifugal, available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 24 reporters, all with values in both windows. The listed 2023 total is 6,270,353 tonnes. India has the largest supply, while the five-year increase was driven mainly by higher figures in India, Pakistan and Brazil. In the latest year, Pakistan rose sharply while China moved in the opposite direction.
India reported the largest 2023 supply at 2,881,245 tonnes, while Colombia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 54.88 grams per person per day. India's 2,881,245 tonnes top the 2023 table at 46.0 percent of the listed total, 2.75 times Colombia's 1,048,031 in second. Myanmar follows at 664,290 with Brazil at 570,061; the top three hold 73.3 percent, the top five 89.8 percent and the top ten 98.8 percent. Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Mexico and Haiti complete the ten. Per person, Colombia stands first at 54.88 grams — second by volume and first per person — with Myanmar at 33.62, Brazil at 7.4, India at 5.49 and Pakistan at 5.17 behind. The common total moved from 5,868,240 tonnes to 6,270,353, up 402,113 tonnes or 6.9 percent across 24 reporters, with none entering or leaving in either window. India added 240,025 tonnes (up 9.1 percent), 59.7 percent of the net increase, with Pakistan adding 226,055 (up 94.0 percent) and Brazil 224,537 (up 65.0 percent); Colombia fell 146,663 (down 12.3 percent) and Myanmar 76,243 (down 10.3 percent), with China down 40,393 (down 14.8 percent) and Venezuela down 26,429 to zero, while the Philippines added 36,211 (up 51.6 percent). The common total rose from 6,017,899 tonnes to 6,270,353, up 252,454 tonnes or 4.2 percent across 24 reporters. Pakistan added 275,689 tonnes (up 144.4 percent) after dipping to 190,969 in 2022, with Brazil adding 68,958 (up 13.8 percent), Colombia 31,694 (up 3.1 percent), India 30,959 (up 1.1 percent) and Myanmar 23,798 (up 3.7 percent); China fell 154,169 tonnes (down 39.8 percent) after spiking to 386,949 in 2022, with the Philippines down 11,862 (down 10.0 percent) and Bangladesh down 7,012 (down 3.7 percent). The FAO item covers cane sugar, non-centrifugal — traditional unrefined grades, not centrifugal raw sugar and not refined, which have their own articles; none are added together here. The figures therefore should not be interpreted as total sugar consumption across all sugar products. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. India had the largest 2023 listed supply of non-centrifugal cane sugar at 2,881,245 tonnes, while Colombia recorded the highest figure per person at 54.88 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 6,270,353 tonnes across 24 reporters, 6.9 percent higher than the common 2019 total. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. Twenty-four reporters, each present in both endpoint windows, fill the file; the tables list reporters only, with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows left out and China standing for the China reporter. Percentages anchor to the earlier endpoint year. Zero-base years produce no percentage, and small-base percentages should be read with the base alongside. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity underlies both measures for non-centrifugal cane sugar: element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day, 2019 to 2023. The measured quantity is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. Zero reports zero; blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 6,270,353 tonnes sums all 24 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Pakistan surge 144.4 percent in one year?
Pakistan reported 190,969 tonnes in 2022 and 466,658 in 2023, a gain of 275,689 tonnes. The figures record the size of the jump, not what caused it.
How can Colombia rank second and first?
Colombia reported 1,048,031 tonnes against 54.88 grams a day, second by volume and first per person. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis.
Did any reporter join or leave?
No: the same 24 reporters hold values in both endpoint windows, with no entries and no exits. A blank cell means no value was reported, which differs from a reported zero.
