Türkiye stayed the seventh-largest whole cow milk cheese producer while adding 70,145 tonnes and Russia more than doubled since 2019. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Cheese from whole cow milk, 2019-2023, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 95 countries, all of which reported a 2023 quantity, and the 2023 annual listed total is 22,979,379 tonnes. The 2023 country list runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

The United States produced 2.72 times as much as Germany: 6,420,928 tonnes against 2,359,510, while France ranks third with 1,731,360 tonnes, 628,150 tonnes behind Germany. The top two hold 38.2 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 1,731,360 and 1,207,190 tonnes respectively.

Cheese from Whole Cow Milk Production by Country in 2023

The United States was the largest whole cow milk cheese producer in the 2023 listed data with 6,420,928 tonnes, followed by Germany with 2,359,510 tonnes and France with 1,731,360 tonnes. Italy ranked fourth with 1,207,190 tonnes.

The United States holds 27.9 percent of the listed 2023 total. The top three together hold 45.7 percent of the 22,979,379-tonne listed total.

Türkiye added 70,145 tonnes (up 10.0 percent), while Russia fell 64,052 tonnes (down 9.6 percent) and Australia 51,650 tonnes (down 12.1 percent).

United States Adds 461,894 Tonnes as Cheese from Whole Cow Milk Production Grows 9.0 Percent Since 2019

Between 2019 and 2023, the common reporter universe (95 countries with data in both years) rose from 21,091,595 tonnes to 22,979,379 tonnes, a change of 1,887,784 tonnes (9.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 21,091,595 tonnes (95 reporters) and 22,979,379 tonnes (95 reporters); no reporter present in 2019 is absent in 2023, while no new reporters joined. The United States added 461,894 tonnes (up 7.8 percent) and Russia 335,746 tonnes (up 124.7 percent), more than doubling from 269,216 tonnes, while Venezuela added 147,440 tonnes (up 65.6 percent).

Yearly totals sum FAO Crops and Livestock Products production quantity (Element 5510) for item Cheese from whole cow milk, 2019-2023. For whole cow milk cheese production, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes. The 2023 whole cow milk cheese production ranking and shares use 2023 listed quantities. In the whole cow milk cheese production data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For whole cow milk cheese production changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Production quantities are reported to FAO by national statistical sources.
