Clays Production by Country

Clays production by country measures how much clays each country produces, expressed in thousand metric tons. The clays indicator combines three related minerals: bentonite, kaolin, and fuller's earth, each reported separately by the source and summed here by country. These are industrial minerals used in ceramics, paper, drilling fluids, and building materials. The statistics are based on USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 11 countries with 2024 and 2025 data available for all of them. The United States figures are withheld to avoid disclosing company proprietary data.

Countries With the Largest Clays Production in 2025

India produced the most clays in 2025 with 12,830 thousand metric tons. China ranked second with 9,900, followed by Uzbekistan (6,060), Russia (5,040), Türkiye (4,530), Iran (3,400), Czechia (2,590), Spain (1,210), Greece (1,050), Mexico (250), and Senegal (190).

Among the 11 countries with available 2025 data, India accounted for about 27 percent of the reported production values, and India and China together accounted for about 48 percent. Only India, China, and Uzbekistan produced more than 6,000 thousand metric tons in 2025.

Clays Production Around the World

In Asia, India (12,830 thousand metric tons) is the largest producer, ahead of China (9,900), Uzbekistan (6,060), Türkiye (4,530), and Iran (3,400). In Europe, Russia (5,040) leads, ahead of Czechia (2,590), Spain (1,210), and Greece (1,050).

In the Americas, Mexico (250) is the only listed producer, while the United States figures are withheld. In Africa, Senegal (190) is the only listed producer.

Clays Production Structure

Clays production shows a two-tier distribution among the listed countries: India and China dominate with a combined 48 percent of reported output, while the remaining nine producers stay below 7,000 thousand metric tons each. The indicator combines bentonite, kaolin, and fuller's earth into a single country total, so the ranking reflects the combined production of these three mineral types.

Largest Changes in Clays Production, 2024–2025

Uzbekistan recorded the largest increase, rising from 5,460 thousand metric tons in 2024 to 6,060 in 2025 (up 600). India rose from 12,800 to 12,830 (up 30), Russia from 5,035 to 5,040 (up 5), and Mexico from 249 to 250 (up 1). Greece recorded the largest decline, falling from 1,079 to 1,050 (down 29), followed by Türkiye (4,556 to 4,530, down 26), Czechia (2,605 to 2,590, down 15), and Spain (1,216 to 1,210, down 6).

Total reported production among the 11 listed countries rose from 46,490 thousand metric tons in 2024 to 47,050 in 2025, an increase of 560 thousand metric tons, or about 1.2 percent. Uzbekistan's gain of 600 thousand metric tons more than offset the combined 40 thousand metric ton decline across the other listed countries, resulting in the 560 thousand metric ton net increase.

The statistics are based on USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, with major processing by Our World in Data. Values refer to clays production, in thousand metric tons, as mine production. Figures here are the sum of the three mineral types that the source reports separately for each country: bentonite, kaolin, and fuller's earth. 2025 figures are estimates from the source. The United States figures are withheld to avoid disclosing company proprietary data.
