Dry Chick Peas Consumption by Country
India's 9,027,731 tonnes were 71.7 percent of listed dry-chick-peas supply in 2023 — 12,589,663 tonnes across 148 reporters — yet India fell 916,436 tonnes in the latest year alone. Five years added 15.0 percent with India behind 71.1 percent of the net gain; Australia climbed from 5,399 tonnes in 2019 to 175,000 while Canada fell 90.9 percent. Australia tops per person at 18.13 grams a day, just ahead of India at 17.2.
India's 2023 dry-chick-peas total of 9,027,731 tonnes was 9.58 times Pakistan's 942,000, with Türkiye third at 450,340. Australia's 18.13 grams a day topped the per-person list, ahead of India at 17.2 and Türkiye at 14.14. India opens the 2023 table at 9,027,731 tonnes (71.7 percent of 12,589,663), Pakistan at 942,000 and Türkiye at 450,340. Ethiopia and Bangladesh follow at 429,053 and 290,834 tonnes. The top three hold 82.8 percent, the top five 88.5 percent and the top ten 94.3 percent. Australia's per-person figure of 18.13 grams a day comes from 175,000 tonnes — seventh by volume and first per person — with India at 17.2 and Türkiye at 14.14 behind. The 144 reporters present in both 2019 and 2023 moved from 10,948,628 tonnes to 12,589,294 — up 1,640,666 tonnes, or 15.0 percent. Cuba left with 806 tonnes while Angola, Nauru, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Afghanistan entered with 369. India added 1,166,402 tonnes (up 14.8 percent), 71.1 percent of the net increase, with Pakistan adding 189,333 (up 25.2 percent), Australia 169,601 from 5,399 tonnes, Bangladesh 80,518 (up 38.3 percent), Ethiopia 58,870 (up 15.9 percent) and Türkiye 38,882 (up 9.4 percent); Canada fell 89,831 (down 90.9 percent) and Syria 36,408 (down 49.1 percent). The 147 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023 moved from 12,966,733 tonnes to 12,589,663 — down 377,070 tonnes, or 2.9 percent, with Nauru entering at 0.09 tonnes and none leaving. India fell 916,436 tonnes (down 9.2 percent) while Pakistan added 307,000 (up 48.3 percent); Australia added 75,000 (up 75.0 percent) and Bangladesh 72,663 (up 33.3 percent), with Iran falling 43,063 (down 24.9 percent), Türkiye adding 40,340 (up 9.8 percent), Ethiopia 37,648 (up 9.6 percent) and Iraq 34,208 (up 99.9 percent). Dry chick peas form their own FAO item here — counted apart from fellow pulses, which are never folded into these figures. The numbers capture food available for human consumption in the reference year; per-day grams divide the same supply by population. In 2023, India had the largest listed dry chick peas supply at 9,027,731 tonnes, followed by Pakistan at 942,000 tonnes and Türkiye at 450,340 tonnes. India accounted for 71.7% of the 12,589,663 tonnes reported across 148 countries. Australia had the highest per-person figure at 18.13 grams per person per day. The FAO measure represents food available for human consumption, not actual intake. Every percentage here divides by the earlier endpoint year, across reporters holding values in both years. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts supply the tonnes (element 5141, food supply quantity) and the daily grams per person (element 665) — for chick peas, dry, 2019 through 2023. Supply available for human consumption in the reference year is what gets counted, not intake. Zero-base years yield no percentage; a zero reports zero and a blank reports nothing. The tables admit reporters only — 149 of them held a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 — with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows left out; China is the China reporter. Tonnes stand as FAO published them, unrounded, and the 2023 listed total of 12,589,663 tonnes adds the 148 reporters with a 2023 value. Frequently Asked Questions
What drove the opposite changes in the two windows?
India added 1,166,402 tonnes over five years but fell 916,436 in the latest one — 71.1 percent of the five-year net gain, then the largest single-year drag. Each window tells its own story in the numbers.
How did Australia rise from 5,399 tonnes?
Australia reported 5,399 tonnes in 2019 and 175,000 in 2023, up 169,601 tonnes from a tiny base. The scale of the climb is in the figures; its causes are not.
Why is Australia first per person at seventh by volume?
Australia's 175,000 tonnes read as 18.13 grams a day per person, just ahead of India's 17.2. The two rankings divide the same supply two ways: by reporters, and by population.
