Edible Offal of Cattle, Fresh, Chilled or Frozen Consumption by Country
China reported the largest food supply of fresh, chilled or frozen cattle offal in 2023, at 1,435,495 tonnes, about 19.3 percent of the listed total of 7,428,900 tonnes. Brazil ranked second at 782,949 tonnes, followed by Argentina at 406,130 tonnes. Argentina also ranked first per person, at 24.43 grams per day, narrowly ahead of Mongolia at 24.16 grams. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Key findings: China had the largest listed food supply of fresh, chilled or frozen cattle offal in 2023, at 1,435,495 tonnes, followed by Brazil at 782,949 tonnes and Argentina at 406,130 tonnes. Argentina ranked first in food supply per person, at 24.43 grams per day, narrowly ahead of Mongolia at 24.16 grams. Across the 172 countries with reported 2023 values, the listed total was 7,428,900 tonnes. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Mexico placed fourth at 350,094 tonnes, with Russia fifth at 336,752 and South Africa sixth at 306,765. Vietnam, Egypt, Uzbekistan and France closed the top ten between 149,018 and 219,709 tonnes. The top three held 35.3 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 44.6 percent. Vietnam added 155,745 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 243.5 percent to 219,709 tonnes. South Korea added 58,748 tonnes, up 89.8 percent. China added 57,278 tonnes, up 4.2 percent. Brazil added 48,747 tonnes, up 6.6 percent. Egypt added 39,907 tonnes, up 23.0 percent. Hong Kong went from 60,859 tonnes to a reported zero. Spain lost 15,618 tonnes, down 22.1 percent. Ghana shed 15,503 tonnes, down 36.9 percent. The 172 countries with reported values in both years rose from 7,094,542 tonnes to 7,428,900 tonnes, up 334,358 tonnes, or 4.7 percent, with no entries or exits. Between 2019 and 2023, the 172 countries with reported values in both years grew from 7,178,182 tonnes, up 250,718 tonnes, or 3.5 percent. China added 174,125 tonnes, up 13.8 percent. Vietnam added 149,308 tonnes, up 212.1 percent. Zimbabwe added 90,244 tonnes from 6,603. Brazil added 78,700 tonnes, up 11.2 percent. South Korea added 57,672 tonnes, up 86.8 percent. Egypt lost 224,919 tonnes, down 51.3 percent. Hong Kong went from 122,305 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023. Myanmar lost 51,864 tonnes, down 74.4 percent, ending at 17,878 tonnes. Two countries left with 23,609 tonnes, and none arrived. Argentina ranked first in 2023 at 24.43 grams per person per day, narrowly ahead of Mongolia at 24.16 grams. Ireland placed third at 19.13 grams, followed by Belarus at 17.28 and Zimbabwe at 16.24. Macau reported 13.75 grams and South Africa 13.30 grams, with Australia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan below 13 grams. China, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population. Edible cattle offal, fresh, chilled or frozen, for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum the 174 reporting countries and areas, 172 with reported 2023 values. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints. Hong Kong fell from 60,859 tonnes in 2022 to a reported zero in 2023, and from 122,305 tonnes in 2019 to zero across the five-year window. India reported 5,991 tonnes in 2019 and zero in every year from 2020 to 2023, while Canada reported 604.58 tonnes in 2020 and zero from 2021 onward. These zeros are retained as supplied by FAO. Whether they reflect real changes in availability or changes in reporting cannot be determined from this table alone, so sharp falls to zero should be checked against the original FAOSTAT records before being interpreted. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report edible offal of cattle food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the largest cattle offal food supply in 2023?
China ranked first in 2023, with 1,435,495 tonnes, followed by Brazil with 782,949 tonnes in the same listed table that year, with Argentina third at 406,130 tonnes.
Which country ranked first per person?
Argentina led reported food supply per person in 2023, narrowly ahead of Mongolia at 24.16 grams per day in the same listed table that year.
Which country recorded the largest increase from 2022 to 2023?
Vietnam recorded the largest absolute increase among the compared countries, rising by 155,745 tonnes to 219,709 tonnes, a gain of 243.5 percent over the period.
Did total listed food supply rise between 2019 and 2023?
Yes. Among the 172 countries with values in both years, the total rose by 250,718 tonnes, or 3.5 percent, over the five-year comparison period, reaching the higher 2023 level.
Do these figures measure actual consumption?
No. They measure the reported food available for human consumption in the reference year, not the amount of cattle offal that individual people actually ate.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
