Cattle Fat, Unrendered Consumption by Country
In 2023, Pakistan recorded the largest reported supply of unrendered cattle fat, at 84,233 tonnes, or about 19.2 percent of the total reported across countries with available data. Canada ranked second with 53,594 tonnes, followed by Russia at 48,995 tonnes. Canada had the highest reported per-capita supply, at 3.74 grams per person per day. FAO food-supply figures describe food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
The Philippines placed fourth at 20,958 tonnes, with Zimbabwe fifth at 20,366 and Australia sixth. Ethiopia, Tanzania, Egypt and Ukraine closed the top ten between 9,294 and 17,411 tonnes. The top three held 42.6 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 52.1 percent. Pakistan had the highest listed food supply, while Canada had the highest per-capita food supply. Australia added 18,326 tonnes between 2022 and 2023 from a zero base. Russia added 6,591 tonnes, up 15.5 percent. Pakistan added 3,125 tonnes, up 3.9 percent. Mongolia added 1,718 tonnes, up 112.2 percent. The Philippines lost 10,997 tonnes, down 34.4 percent. South Korea shed 7,491 tonnes, down 82.8 percent. New Zealand gave up 3,305 tonnes, down 82.6 percent. Canada fell 1,710 tonnes, down 3.1 percent. The 135 countries present in both years rose from 429,821 tonnes to 438,284 tonnes, up 8,463 tonnes, or 2.0 percent, with one arrival carrying 11 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 131 countries present in both years fell from 476,372 tonnes to 436,969 tonnes, down 39,403 tonnes, or 8.3 percent. Brazil went from 27,499 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023. The United Kingdom likewise reports zero for 2023 after 12,256 in 2019. Zimbabwe added 18,867 tonnes from 1,499. Australia added 18,326 tonnes from a zero base. South Korea lost 10,442 tonnes, down 87.1 percent. Vietnam went from 8,885 tonnes to a reported zero. Myanmar shed 8,875 tonnes, down 74.4 percent. Mexico gave up 5,857 tonnes, down 76.0 percent. One country left holding nothing, against five arrivals with 1,325 tonnes. Canada's 3.74 grams a day edged Zimbabwe's 3.41, with Mongolia third at 2.59 and Eswatini at 2.25. The Czech Republic sat fifth at 2.11 grams, with Botswana at 2.05 and Turkmenistan at 1.95. Australia, Nicaragua and Paraguay followed below two grams. Pakistan, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Unrendered cattle fat for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The tonnage figures show total reported supply; the per-person figures adjust that supply for population size. Vietnam's reported value fell from 8,885 tonnes in 2019 to zero in 2023. South Korea fell 82.8 percent lately and 87.1 percent across five years, yet still reports. Zimbabwe rose 1,258.6 percent from 1,499 tonnes between 2019 and 2023. Brazil, the United Kingdom and Vietnam reported zeros in 2023 after substantial earlier values, so those zeros merit checking against the source. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts file tonnage for human consumption under element 5141 and daily grams per person under element 665, shown for unrendered cattle fat across 2019-2023. Percentages build on the earlier year, and zero bases build nothing. The dataset contains 137 countries after aggregates are removed, 136 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 438,294 tonnes is the sum of the 136 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the highest per-capita supply of unrendered cattle fat in 2023?
Canada ranked first at 3.74 grams per person per day, followed by Zimbabwe at 3.41 grams and Mongolia at 2.59 grams per day in the same table.
What share of reported unrendered cattle fat supply came from Pakistan?
Pakistan accounted for approximately 19.2 percent of the reported 2023 total, with 84,233 tonnes in the same listed table that year, ahead of Canada in second place.
Which countries ranked second and third by total supply?
Canada ranked second by total reported supply with 53,594 tonnes in 2023, while Russia ranked third with 48,995 tonnes in the same table that year.
Does food supply mean the amount of cattle fat people actually ate?
No. FAO food-supply figures measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not the amount actually eaten by individuals in any listed country.
Why should reported zero values be interpreted carefully?
A reported zero is different from a blank data field, but the figure alone does not explain why supply was recorded as zero. For example, Brazil and the United Kingdom both reported zero tonnes in 2023 after positive values in 2019.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
