Electricity Exports by Country
Electricity exports by country measures the amount of electricity exported in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 94 countries with reported 2024 values, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 2.87 quad Btu in 2024, up from 2.78 in 2023.
Electricity exports measure the quantity of electricity exported across international borders, as reported in the EIA dataset. France alone accounted for about 12 percent of the World total in 2024, and France and Germany together accounted for about 19 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 24 percent, the top five for about 33 percent, and the top ten for about 51 percent. France's electricity exports were about 1.9 times those of Germany, the second-largest exporter. France had the largest electricity exports in 2024 with 0.36 quad Btu. Germany ranked second with 0.19 quad Btu, followed by Switzerland (0.14), Sweden (0.13), Laos (0.13), Canada (0.12), Norway (0.11), Paraguay (0.10), Austria (0.09), and Spain (0.08). In Asia, Laos was the largest electricity exporter in 2024 at 0.13 quad Btu, followed by China (0.08) and Turkmenistan (0.03). In Europe, France was the largest exporter at 0.36 quad Btu, followed by Germany (0.19) and Switzerland (0.14). In North America, Canada was the largest exporter at 0.12 quad Btu, ahead of the United States (0.07). In South America, Paraguay was the largest exporter at 0.10 quad Btu, well ahead of Brazil (0.0086). In the Middle East and Africa, export values were generally smaller, with most countries reporting less than 0.02 quad Btu. From the same EIA dataset, electricity imports and exports are reported separately. The comparison is limited to the two indicators taken directly from the same EIA tables. Electricity exports were concentrated among the largest exporters: the top five exporters accounted for about 33 percent of World exports in 2024, while the top ten accounted for about 51 percent. France was the largest exporter in 2019, 2023 and 2024, while Canada ranked first in 2020 and Germany in 2021 and 2022. France recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 0.26 quad Btu in 2023 to 0.36 in 2024 (up 0.1, about 38.3 percent). Switzerland rose by about 0.02 quad Btu, while Denmark increased by about 0.02 quad Btu. Canada recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.17 to 0.12 quad Btu (down 0.05, about 27.7 percent). Germany fell from 0.2 to 0.19 (down 0.02), while Brazil declined by 0.02. The World total rose from 2.78 to 2.87 quad Btu (up 0.09, about 3.3 percent). The trend between 2019 and 2024 shows variations across countries, with some recording steady growth and others experiencing fluctuations. The World total for electricity exports moved between 2.51 and 2.87 quad Btu in this period. It was 2.51 in 2019, 2.56 in 2020, 2.64 in 2021, 2.82 in 2022, 2.78 in 2023, and then 2.87 in 2024. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to electricity exports, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.2-4 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of individually listed countries may not equal the World total where shown because of differences in coverage, estimates, and rounding. This page covers electricity exports only and does not include other indicators, which are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the largest electricity exports in 2024 in this dataset?
France had the largest electricity exports in this dataset in 2024 with 0.36 quad Btu.
How many countries are included for electricity exports in this dataset?
94 countries are listed, all with a reported 2024 value; the source reports the World total as 2.87 quad Btu for 2024.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures electricity exports, in quad Btu per year, where the source lists values individually. It is distinct from other indicators which are reported separately in the same tables.
