Electricity Imports by Country
Electricity imports by country measures the amount of electricity imported in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 112 countries with a reported 2024 value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 2.84 quad Btu in 2024, up from 2.74 in 2023.
Electricity imports measures the quantity of electricity imported across international borders, as reported in the EIA dataset.
Electricity Imports by Country
Germany accounted for about 10 percent of the World total in 2024, while Germany and Italy together accounted for about 17 percent. The top three countries accounted for about 22 percent, the top five for about 30 percent, and the top ten for about 45 percent. Germany's electricity imports were about 1.5 times those of Italy, the second-largest importer.
Countries With the Largest Electricity Imports in 2024
Germany had the largest electricity imports in 2024 with 0.28 quad Btu. Italy ranked second with 0.19 quad Btu, followed by United Kingdom (0.15), Thailand (0.12), United States (0.11), Belgium (0.09), Switzerland (0.09), Denmark (0.09), Canada (0.08), Hungary (0.08).
Electricity Imports Around the World
Europe accounted for several of the largest electricity import values in the dataset in 2024. Germany recorded the highest value at 0.2786 quad Btu, followed by Italy at 0.1908 and the United Kingdom at 0.1492. Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, and the Czech Republic also recorded relatively high values.
In North America, the United States recorded electricity imports of 0.1135 quad Btu, followed by Canada at 0.0792. In South America, Brazil had the highest value at 0.0481 quad Btu, while Argentina recorded 0.0346. In Asia, Thailand was the largest individual importer in the dataset at 0.1228 quad Btu, followed by Hong Kong at 0.0388 and Bangladesh at 0.0341. Import values were generally smaller across many countries in Africa and the Middle East.
Comparison of Electricity Imports and Exports
From the same EIA dataset, electricity imports and exports are reported separately. The comparison is limited to the two indicators taken directly from the same EIA tables.
Global Structure in This Dataset
Electricity imports were concentrated among a relatively small group of countries in 2024. The top five importers accounted for about 30 percent of the reported World total, while the top ten accounted for about 45 percent. Germany became the largest importer in 2023 and remained in first place through 2024, after the United States had recorded the highest value from 2019 to 2021.
Largest Changes in Electricity Imports, 2023-2024
Germany recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 0.2365 quad Btu in 2023 to 0.2786 in 2024, an increase of 0.0421 quad Btu or approximately 17.8 percent. The United Kingdom rose by 0.0357 quad Btu, while Belgium increased by 0.0257 quad Btu.
France recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.0868 to 0.0516 quad Btu (down 0.0352, about 40.6 percent). Brazil fell from 0.0761 to 0.0481 quad Btu (down 0.0280, about 36.8 percent), while the United States declined from 0.1328 to 0.1135 quad Btu (down 0.0193, about 14.5 percent). The World total rose from 2.74 to 2.84 quad Btu, an increase of 0.10 quad Btu or approximately 3.6 percent.
The trend between 2019 and 2024 shows variations across countries, with some recording steady growth and others experiencing fluctuations.
Total and Ratio Analysis for 2019-2024
The World total for electricity imports moved between 2.47 and 2.84 quad Btu in this period. It was 2.47 in 2019, 2.55 in 2020, 2.64 in 2021, 2.78 in 2022, 2.74 in 2023, and then 2.84 in 2024.

Methodology
The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to electricity imports, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.2-3 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of individually listed countries does not equal the World total where shown, because the source includes estimates and rounding. This page covers electricity imports only and does not include other indicators, which are reported separately in the source.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the largest electricity imports in 2024 in this dataset?
Germany had the largest electricity imports in this dataset in 2024 with 0.28 quad Btu.
How many countries are included for electricity imports in this dataset?
The table covers 112 countries with reported values for 2019-2024 where listed; the source reports the World total as 2.84 quad Btu for 2024.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures electricity imports, in quad Btu per year, where the source lists values individually. It is distinct from other indicators which are reported separately in the same tables.
