Tea and Mate Extract Supply by Country
The United States had the highest reported food supply of tea and mate extracts, essences and concentrates in 2023, at 58,992 tonnes. This represented approximately 55.9 percent of the 105,551 tonnes reported by 134 countries with available data. Denmark ranked second at 4,064 tonnes, followed by Portugal at 4,038 tonnes. On a per-person basis, Vanuatu ranked first at 2.26 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual individual intake.
The Philippines placed fourth at 3,556 tonnes, with Saudi Arabia fifth at 2,321 and France sixth at 2,204. Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Cambodia and Greece closed the top ten between 1,791 and 2,161 tonnes. The top three held 63.6 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 69.1 percent. The United States had the highest listed food supply, while Vanuatu had the highest per-capita food supply. Between 2022 and 2023, Denmark's reported supply rose by 1,947 tonnes to 4,064 tonnes, an increase of 92.0 percent. Cambodia added 1,728 tonnes, while Portugal increased by 1,317 tonnes to 4,038 tonnes. In contrast, the Philippines fell by 2,333 tonnes to 3,556 tonnes, and Sweden declined from 1,441 tonnes to 105.66 tonnes. Myanmar's reported value fell from 982.97 tonnes to zero. Across the 132 countries with values in both years, the combined total increased by 1,780 tonnes, or approximately 1.7 percent, from 103,752 to 105,532 tonnes. Across the 130 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, the combined total rose from approximately 97,413 to 105,530 tonnes, an increase of about 8.3 percent. The United States added 10,790 tonnes, more than the net increase across the group because declines elsewhere offset part of its growth. Portugal added 2,244 tonnes, while Cambodia increased from 109.01 to 1,897 tonnes. Greece, Belgium and the Philippines recorded substantial declines, and Mexico's reported value fell from 1,657 tonnes to zero. These comparisons use only countries with values at both endpoints; missing entries are not treated as zero. Vanuatu's 2.26 grams a day edged Denmark's 1.87, with Maldives third at 1.35 and the Solomon Islands at 1.28. Iceland sat fifth at 1.10 grams, with Portugal at 1.06 and Hong Kong at 0.75. The Bahamas, Greece and the United States followed below 0.6 grams. The United States, first by volume, placed only tenth per person at 0.47 grams, far below Vanuatu. Tea and mate extracts, essences, concentrates and preparations with a tea or mate basis, for human consumption, are grouped here in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Cambodia rose from 109.01 tonnes in 2019 to 1,897 tonnes in 2023; Greece's latest increase divided by 577 tonnes. Myanmar's reported value fell from 982.97 tonnes in 2022 to zero in 2023, and Mexico's from 1,657 tonnes in 2019 to zero. Sweden fell from 1,441 tonnes in 2022 to 105.66 tonnes in 2023. Large moves between substantial values and zeros should be checked against the source. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts file tonnage for human consumption under element 5141 and daily grams per person under element 665, shown for tea and mate extracts across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base. Percentage changes are not calculated from a zero baseline. The dataset contains 135 countries after aggregates are removed, 134 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of the 134 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country ranks first per person for tea and mate extract supply?
Vanuatu ranked first in 2023 at 2.26 grams per person per day, followed by Denmark at 1.87 grams and the Maldives at 1.35 grams in the same table.
What share of the reported total came from the United States?
The United States accounted for approximately 55.9 percent of the 105,551 listed tonnes reported by 134 countries with available 2023 data in the same table.
How much did Denmark's reported supply change in the latest year?
Denmark's reported supply increased by 1,947 tonnes, from 2,117 tonnes in 2022 to 4,064 tonnes in 2023, a rise of approximately 92.0 percent over the year.
Do these figures measure how much tea or mate people actually drink?
No. The FAO indicators measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not the quantity actually consumed by individuals in any country that year.
Why can a country show a very large percentage increase from a small starting value?
When the initial quantity is small, a modest absolute increase can produce a very large percentage. Cambodia's reported supply rose from 109.01 tonnes in 2019 to 1,897 tonnes in 2023, so the absolute change is also important for interpreting the trend.
