The United Kingdom recorded the largest reported food supply for food preparations n.e.c. in 2023, at 831,438 tonnes, or about 13.3 percent of the listed total. The Philippines ranked second at 335,933 tonnes, followed by Saudi Arabia at 306,223 tonnes. Grenada ranked first in per-capita availability, at 156.69 grams a day. The listed 2023 total was 6,252,249 tonnes, and 144 of the 145 country rows reported a value for that year, 137 of them above zero. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

The United States Records the Largest Annual Decline

The United States lost 82,306 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 48.3 percent to 88,134 tonnes. Australia lost 81,697 tonnes, down 23.3 percent, and Mozambique shed 65,030 tonnes, down 83.2 percent, to 13,161 tonnes. The Philippines added 42,315 tonnes, up 14.4 percent, Venezuela added 47,135 tonnes, up 87.6 percent, and Cambodia added 66,222 tonnes, up 104.8 percent. The countries with a value in both years fell from 6,477,729 tonnes to 6,252,249 tonnes, down 225,480 tonnes, or 3.5 percent, with no departures and no arrivals.

Norway Records the Largest Five-Year Decline

Between 2019 and 2023, the 143 countries with a value in both years eased from 6,182,989 tonnes to 6,164,115 tonnes, down 18,874 tonnes, or 0.3 percent. Norway recorded the largest decline, losing 309,653 tonnes, down 71.4 percent. Australia shed 138,184 tonnes, down 33.9 percent, and Myanmar gave up 127,500 tonnes, down 97.6 percent. The Philippines added 113,544 tonnes, up 51.0 percent, Hong Kong added 114,122 tonnes, up 74.5 percent, and Saudi Arabia added 137,210 tonnes, up 81.2 percent. The United States entered the comparison with a 2023 value and no 2019 value, while Cuba left it.

Grenada Leads Food Preparations Supply per Person

Grenada recorded 156.69 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Barbados at 136.69 grams in second and Nauru at 116.99 grams in third. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines sat fourth at 106.12 grams.

What the Food Preparations Data Measures

Food preparations n.e.c. available for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The n.e.c. label groups products that do not fall under a more specific classification. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size.

Seven countries reported zero tonnes in 2023, including Morocco, which fell from 5,786 tonnes in 2022, so that drop warrants a source check. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the single row without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for food preparations n.e.c. over 2019-2023. Of the 145 country rows, 144 reported a value in 2023 and 137 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives the same set of countries for 2022-2023 and 143 of them for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.
