Female Population Aged 80 and Above by Country (%)
The female population aged 80 and above measures the share of women aged 80 years or older in a country's female population, expressed as a percentage. It is a demographic indicator of population aging among women and is closely linked to life expectancy and age structure. A higher share generally reflects an older female population. Because women generally live longer than men, these shares are higher than the corresponding shares for males in most countries. The dataset covers 215 countries and territories with values from 2020 to 2025.
Monaco recorded the highest share of females aged 80 and above in 2025 at 17.90 percent. Japan ranked second with 13.02 percent, followed by Italy (9.50 percent), Greece (9.05 percent), and Germany (8.98 percent). Portugal (8.73 percent), Latvia (8.58 percent), Estonia (8.52 percent), Puerto Rico (8.31 percent), and San Marino (7.98 percent) complete the top ten. Most of the countries with the highest shares are located in Europe, reflecting the continent's aging population. Among the 215 countries and territories with 2025 data, 47 have at least 5 percent of their female population aged 80 and above. At the other end of the ranking, Nauru records the lowest share at 0.07 percent, followed by the Central African Republic (0.19 percent), the United Arab Emirates (0.24 percent), and Zambia (0.24 percent). Among the world's major economies, Japan records by far the highest share at 13.02 percent, above Italy (9.50 percent), Germany (8.98 percent), France (7.71 percent), and the United States (4.99 percent). South Korea records 6.43 percent, while China (3.25 percent), India (1.30 percent), and Brazil (2.45 percent) remain well below 5 percent. In Europe, the highest shares are recorded in Monaco (17.90 percent), Italy (9.50 percent), Greece (9.05 percent), Germany (8.98 percent), and Portugal (8.73 percent), followed by Latvia (8.58 percent), Estonia (8.52 percent), Spain (7.92 percent), Lithuania (7.91 percent), and Finland (7.80 percent). Many other European countries also record shares above 7 percent, including France (7.71 percent), Austria (7.60 percent), Sweden (7.22 percent), and Switzerland (7.16 percent). In Asia, Japan (13.02 percent) records the highest share, followed by South Korea (6.43 percent), Hong Kong (5.70 percent), Australia (5.25 percent), and New Zealand (4.76 percent). China (3.25 percent), Vietnam (2.16 percent), and India (1.30 percent) record considerably lower shares, while Thailand (4.04 percent) remains below the region's highest shares. In the Americas, Puerto Rico (8.31 percent) records the highest share, followed by Uruguay (6.52 percent), Canada (5.79 percent), the United States (4.99 percent), and Cuba (4.94 percent). In Africa, the shares are the lowest in the world, reflecting young populations and shorter lifespans: the Central African Republic (0.19 percent), Zambia (0.24 percent), and Chad (0.25 percent) all record shares below 0.3 percent. In the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates (0.24 percent) and Qatar (0.25 percent) record the lowest shares in the world. This largely reflects their predominantly young migrant workforces, which are heavily concentrated in the working-age population. Puerto Rico recorded the largest increase between 2020 and 2025, rising from 6.45 percent to 8.31 percent, up 1.86 percentage points. Japan recorded the second largest increase (11.47 to 13.02 percent, up 1.55 percentage points), followed by the US Virgin Islands (4.89 to 6.27 percent, up 1.38 percentage points) and South Korea (5.11 to 6.43 percent, up 1.32 percentage points). Monaco recorded the largest decline, falling from 18.94 percent to 17.90 percent, down 1.04 percentage points, followed by Armenia (3.86 to 2.96 percent, down 0.90 percentage points) and Belarus (5.61 to 4.85 percent, down 0.76 percentage points). The statistics are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators dataset, indicator SP.POP.80UP.FE.5Y (Population ages 80 and above, female, percent of female population). The main comparison uses 2025 data where available, covering all 215 countries and territories in the dataset. For countries without a 2025 observation, the latest available year is noted where relevant, but earlier years are not substituted for missing 2025 values in the ranking. Values are expressed as a percentage of the female population. Missing observations are treated as missing, not as zero.Countries With the Highest Share of Females Aged 80 and Above in 2025
