Fermented Beverages Consumption by Country

In 2023, China had the largest listed food supply of fermented beverages among 152 reporters, at 3,631 thousand tonnes, while Burkina Faso had the highest per-capita figure at 64.29 kilograms per person per year. The 2023 listed total was 21,209 thousand tonnes, with Uganda second at 2,747 thousand tonnes and Tanzania third at 2,502 thousand tonnes. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Fermented Beverages Consumption

China leads the 2023 ranking at 3,631 thousand tonnes, 1.32 times Uganda at 2,747 thousand tonnes. Burkina Faso tops the per-capita ranking at 64.29 kilograms per person per year from 1,480 thousand tonnes, ahead of Cameroon at 61.94 kilograms.

Fermented Beverages Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed fermented beverages food supply in 2023 at 3,631 thousand tonnes.
  • Uganda ranked second at 2,747 thousand tonnes, followed by Tanzania at 2,502 thousand tonnes.
  • Burkina Faso had the highest per-capita food supply at 64.29 kilograms per person per year.
  • The 2023 listed total was 21,209 thousand tonnes across 152 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 148 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed fermented beverages food supply increased by 2,431 thousand tonnes, or 12.9 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually drunk.

Key Takeaways

China remained far ahead of the other reporters in 2023, with Uganda and Tanzania forming a distant second tier. Cameroon and Burkina Faso followed the top three, while Burkina Faso stood out on a per-capita basis despite a smaller total supply. The gap between total and per-capita rankings shows how population size substantially changes the picture when fermented beverages food supply is viewed on an individual basis.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 152 reporters with data in both years eased by 159 thousand tonnes, or 0.7 percent. China, Canada, France and Ethiopia accounted for most of the largest increases, while Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Uganda and South Korea recorded notable declines. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 12.9 percent, with Uganda contributing 40.0 percent of the net increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of fermented beverages actually drunk.

Fermented Beverages Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by China, whose listed food supply of fermented beverages reached 3,631 thousand tonnes. Uganda followed with 2,747 thousand tonnes and Tanzania with 2,502 thousand tonnes. Cameroon and Burkina Faso completed the top five at 1,757 and 1,480 thousand tonnes, respectively.

China holds 17.1 percent of the 21,209-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 41.9 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 57.1 percent and the top ten 78.7 percent. Poland records just 1 thousand tonnes in 2023 against 230 thousand tonnes in 2019.

China Adds 342 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Edges Down 0.7 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 152 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 21,368 thousand tonnes to 21,209 thousand tonnes, a decline of 159 thousand tonnes (0.7 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 152 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 342 thousand tonnes (up 10.4 percent), Canada added 114 thousand tonnes (up 78.1 percent), France added 87 thousand tonnes (up 13.3 percent) and Ethiopia added 76 thousand tonnes (up 10.6 percent), while Tanzania fell 260 thousand tonnes (down 9.4 percent), Burkina Faso fell 194 thousand tonnes (down 11.6 percent), Uganda fell 158 thousand tonnes (down 5.4 percent) and South Korea fell 98 thousand tonnes (down 7.2 percent).

Uganda Adds 972 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 12.9 Percent Since 2019

For the 148 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 18,778 thousand tonnes to 21,209 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,431 thousand tonnes (12.9 percent). The 2019 total covers 150 reporters with reported values, compared with 152 in 2023. Cuba and Kuwait had reported zeros in 2019 but no 2023 value, while Mauritania, Qatar, Tuvalu and the United Arab Emirates had no 2019 value but reported zero in 2023. Uganda added 972 thousand tonnes (up 54.8 percent), China added 557 thousand tonnes (up 18.1 percent), Nigeria added 284 thousand tonnes (up 36.5 percent), Cameroon added 245 thousand tonnes (up 16.2 percent) and Rwanda added 118 thousand tonnes (up 21.8 percent), while Tanzania fell 298 thousand tonnes (down 10.6 percent), Poland fell 229 thousand tonnes (down 99.6 percent) and South Korea fell 119 thousand tonnes (down 8.6 percent).

Uganda contributes 40.0 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by China at 22.9 percent. Poland's fall from 230 to 1 thousand tonnes is the sharpest exit in the window. Per capita, Burkina Faso's 64.29 kilograms from 1,480 thousand tonnes lead Cameroon at 61.94 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 2.55 kilograms.

What Does the Fermented Beverages Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Beverages, Fermented recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of fermented beverages people actually drank. Wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages recorded under separate items sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Fermented Beverages Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed fermented beverages food supply among the 152 reporters with reported values, at 3,631 thousand tonnes. Uganda ranked second at 2,747 thousand tonnes, while Tanzania ranked third at 2,502 thousand tonnes. Burkina Faso had the highest per-capita fermented beverages food supply at 64.29 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of fermented beverages actually drunk.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Beverages, Fermented from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually drunk, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 154 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 21,209 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 152 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of the five-year increase comes from Uganda?

Uganda added 972 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, or 40.0 percent of the 2,431-thousand-tonne net increase. China added 557 thousand tonnes and Nigeria added 284 thousand tonnes against Tanzania's 298-thousand-tonne decline.

Why did Poland's fermented beverages food supply collapse?

The FAO Food Balances data show Poland at 230 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 1 thousand tonnes in 2023, but this dataset alone does not establish the cause of the decline. The 229-thousand-tonne decrease was down 99.6 percent.

Is the food supply of fermented beverages the same as beverages actually drunk?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually drank, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
