Fonio Exports by Country
The Netherlands earns more from fonio exports than Senegal and Burkina Faso combined while shipping about half their tonnage. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Fonio, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. The table lists 29 countries; 18 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 246.37 tonnes. The 2024 country list for fonio exports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
Senegal was the largest fonio exporter in the 2024 listed data with 76.80 tonnes, followed by Burkina Faso with 62.52 tonnes and the Netherlands with 39.11 tonnes. Belgium ranked fourth with 26.18 tonnes, ahead of Togo (26.00 tonnes), Ivory Coast (6.86 tonnes), Italy (2.5 tonnes) and Germany (2.44 tonnes). On export value, the Netherlands led at 340,000 US dollars, ahead of Senegal (73,000) and Burkina Faso (49,000). Third place by quantity, first by value: the Netherlands' 39.11 tonnes earned 340,000 dollars, about 8,693 dollars per tonne against Senegal's 951, so the value ranking inverts the quantity order at the top. The divergence reflects unit values inside the reported trade, never a price claim. Senegal holds 31.2 percent of the listed 2024 total, only about 1.23 times Burkina Faso, so the lead is narrow. The top three together hold 72.4 percent, the top five 93.6 percent and the top ten 99.8 percent. Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ivory Coast lead exports in West Africa; the Netherlands and Belgium were among the larger European exporters; and Mali, which reported 149.86 tonnes for 2023, reported nothing for 2024. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (14 countries with data in both years) rose from 205.87 tonnes to 246.07 tonnes, a change of 40.20 tonnes (19.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 358 tonnes (20 reporters) and 246 tonnes (18 reporters); 6 countries reporting in 2023 (about 152 tonnes combined, led by Mali with 149.86 tonnes) did not report in 2024, while the Czech Republic (0.17 tonnes), Spain (0.12 tonnes), Ireland (0.01 tonnes) and Benin (zero) reported in 2024 without 2023 data. The Netherlands added 36.77 tonnes (from 2.34 to 39.11 tonnes) and Burkina Faso 19.90 tonnes (up 46.7 percent). The United Kingdom fell from 9.43 tonnes to 0.02 tonnes (down 99.8 percent), a reported near-zero flow rather than a reporting gap. Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (12 countries with data in both years) rose from 214.03 tonnes to 244.85 tonnes, a change of 30.82 tonnes (14.4 percent). The totals listed for each year were 221 tonnes (16 reporters) and 246 tonnes (18 reporters). Senegal added 37.17 tonnes (up 93.8 percent) and Belgium 16.17 tonnes (from 10.01 to 26.18 tonnes, up 161.5 percent). Togo fell 58.00 tonnes (from 84 to 26 tonnes, down 69.0 percent) and Ivory Coast 13.15 tonnes (from 20.01 to 6.86 tonnes, down 65.7 percent). Sub-tonne precision matters in a market this small: displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes (76.80 stays 76.80, 0.02 stays 0.02), and whole tonnes above. With that fixed, yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Fonio, export quantity and export value, 2020-2024; values are full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 fonio exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the fonio exports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For fonio exports changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may disagree.Fonio Exports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Netherlands earn the most from third place?
The Netherlands reported 39.11 tonnes (third) and 340,000 US dollars (first) for 2024, about 8,693 dollars per tonne against Senegal's 951. Dividing each country's own value by its own quantity for the same year produces the gap.
What happened to Mali's 149.86 tonnes?
Mali reported 149.86 tonnes for 2023, the largest single-year figure of any country missing in 2024, and nothing for 2024. Blank means not reported rather than zero, so Mali leaves the ranking and the change universe while shaping each-year totals.
How should the United Kingdom's fall be read?
The United Kingdom fell from 9.43 tonnes in 2023 to 0.02 tonnes in 2024 (down 99.8 percent). Both endpoint values are reported in the fonio series, indicating near-zero trade rather than a missing cell.
Which questions can this fonio exports table not answer?
Whether fonio output rose or fell, who consumed it, or what it cost to produce; none of that is in this dataset. It records export quantities and values by reporter, so only export-side comparisons hold.
