Fonio Imports by Country
France buys two-fifths of the fonio imports in this table, and the only buyer that ever challenged it, the United States, halved its buying over four years. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Fonio, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 47 countries; 24 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 452.53 tonnes. The 2024 country list for fonio imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
France was the largest fonio importer in the 2024 listed data with 190.21 tonnes, followed by the United States with 108.88 tonnes and the Netherlands with 48.53 tonnes. Ivory Coast ranked fourth with 42.37 tonnes, ahead of Belgium (29.29 tonnes), the United Kingdom (9.42 tonnes), Spain (4.38 tonnes) and Canada (3.73 tonnes). The United States led on import value at 173,000 US dollars, just ahead of France (170,000) and the Netherlands (75,000). Value leadership and quantity leadership split at the top: the United States leads on dollars (173,000) while France leads on tonnes (190.21), and the gap is only 3,000 dollars. France buys about 1.75 times the United States by weight (190.21 / 108.88). France holds 42.0 percent of the listed 2024 total; the top three together hold 76.8 percent, the top five 92.7 percent and the top ten 98.0 percent. The United States is the only buyer in the Americas above 5 tonnes; Ivory Coast buys from next door in West Africa; and the rest of the ranking runs through the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom in Europe. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (21 countries with data in both years) rose from 384.94 tonnes to 448.52 tonnes, a change of 63.58 tonnes (16.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 414 tonnes (31 reporters) and 453 tonnes (24 reporters). Ivory Coast added 35.28 tonnes (from 7.09 to 42.37 tonnes) and the Netherlands 34.66 tonnes (from 13.87 to 48.53 tonnes), with no percentages stated for moves from such bases. France added 23.90 tonnes (up 14.4 percent). The United Kingdom fell 24.80 tonnes (from 34.22 to 9.42 tonnes, down 72.5 percent) and the United States 18.87 tonnes (down 14.8 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (17 countries with data in both years) fell from 496.08 tonnes to 441.55 tonnes, a change of -54.53 tonnes (-11.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 539 tonnes (22 reporters) and 453 tonnes (24 reporters). France added 26.43 tonnes (up 16.1 percent). The United States fell 112.70 tonnes (down 50.9 percent) and the Netherlands 17.16 tonnes (down 26.1 percent). Every quantity here sits below 1,000 tonnes, so two decimals are not decoration but the data itself: 190.21 stays 190.21, 0.37 stays 0.37. A 0 entry would denote a reported nil or negligible flow, while an empty cell (Poland's 2024 entry, blank after 18.34 tonnes in 2023) denotes nothing reported. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Fonio, import quantity and import value, 2020-2024; values are full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 fonio imports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. The fonio imports table distinguishes reported zero flows from empty, unreported cells. For fonio imports changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an import record and its mirror export may disagree.Fonio Imports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the United States lead on dollars but not on tonnes?
The United States reported 108.88 tonnes (second) and 173,000 US dollars (first) for 2024, against France's 190.21 tonnes and 170,000 dollars. The 3,000-dollar gap reflects unit values inside the reported trade: value divided by quantity for the same country and year.
How should Ivory Coast's climb be read without a percentage?
Ivory Coast moved from 7.09 tonnes in 2023 to 42.37 tonnes in 2024, an increase of 35.28 tonnes. A rate off a 7-tonne base would run near 500 percent while describing about 35 tonnes, so the climb appears in absolute terms with both endpoints shown.
Why did Switzerland nearly vanish while Japan held on?
Switzerland fell from 7.79 tonnes in 2023 to 0.37 tonnes in 2024 (down 95.3 percent) while Japan moved from 7 tonnes to 1 tonne. Both endpoints are reported values, so both moves count inside the change arithmetic; neither is a reporting gap.
What does this fonio imports series not show?
This dataset does not cover production, stocks, domestic use, or processing; it records reporter-level import quantities and values, so its comparisons stay on the import side.
