Fuel Ethanol Consumption by Country
Fuel ethanol consumption by country measures fuel ethanol consumed for each country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. This measures ethanol used as a transportation fuel, rather than ethanol for beverage or industrial purposes. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 67 countries, with 65 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 96.6671 Mmt in 2024, up from 89.2972 Mmt in 2023.
The United States (42.6097 Mmt) and Brazil (28.8624 Mmt) dominate, as in production. India (4.9067 Mmt) holds third ahead of China (3.8539 Mmt), with Canada (3.2143 Mmt) fifth. France (1.3348 Mmt) was the sixth-largest consumer and the largest in Europe. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 44.1% of the reported world total in 2024, consuming about 1.5 times as much as Brazil. The top two together held about 73.9%, the top three about 79.0%, the top five about 86.3%, and the top ten about 92.3%. Brazil's consumption rose sharply from 22.5222 to 28.8624 Mmt (+6.3402 Mmt, about 28.2%), the sharpest rise in the table. The world total rose from 89.2972 to 96.6671 Mmt (+7.3699 Mmt, about 8.3%), which means Brazil alone supplied about 86% of the world increase — an unusually high share for a single country. India recorded the largest decline among reported pairs, edging down from 4.9814 to 4.9067 Mmt (-0.0747 Mmt, about 1.5%). Reported world values were 86.9019 Mmt in 2019, 77.2946 Mmt in 2020, 82.2638 Mmt in 2021, 85.1463 Mmt in 2022, 89.2972 Mmt in 2023 and 96.6671 Mmt in 2024. Consumption ended about 11.2% above the 2019 level, with 2024 well above the pre-2020 range. The figures show the change over time but do not explain its causes. Ethanol consumption broadly follows the production pattern: the same five countries lead both rankings in the same order, and the United States consumed 42.6097 Mmt against production of 48.1800 Mmt. The gap between the top two and the rest is stark — third-placed India at 4.9067 Mmt is only about one-sixth of Brazil. As elsewhere in this dataset, many countries have earlier values but no reported 2024 value. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual fuel ethanol consumption in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. Coverage is thinner than in other energy series: many countries have values for earlier years but no reported 2024 value. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers fuel ethanol consumption only; biomass-based diesel and total biofuels are reported separately in the source.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries consume the most fuel ethanol?
The United States (42.6097 Mmt) and Brazil (28.8624 Mmt) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by India (4.9067 Mmt), China (3.8539 Mmt) and Canada (3.2143 Mmt).
Why did world consumption jump in 2024?
The world total rose from 89.2972 to 96.6671 Mmt (+7.3699 Mmt, about 8.3%), and Brazil's +6.3402 Mmt alone accounted for about 86% of that rise. The page reports the numbers; the source does not explain the causes.
Does consumption follow production?
Largely yes: the same five countries lead both rankings in the same order. The United States produced 48.1800 Mmt and consumed 42.6097 Mmt in 2024.
Why do so few countries report 2024 values?
The table covers 67 countries, but only 65 have a reported 2024 value. Empty cells mean no reported value rather than zero, and many countries report values only for earlier years.
