Fuel Ethanol Production by Country
Fuel ethanol production by country measures fuel ethanol produced for each country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. Fuel ethanol is ethanol intended for blending into motor gasoline, distinct from biomass-based diesel and from ethanol used for beverage or industrial purposes. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 69 countries, with 57 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 96.6231 Mmt in 2024, up from 93.6913 Mmt in 2023.
Fuel ethanol production is highly concentrated. The United States (48.1800 Mmt) and Brazil (28.5615 Mmt) together hold nearly four-fifths of reported world production. India (4.9303 Mmt) edged ahead of China (3.4904 Mmt) for third place, with Canada (1.3870 Mmt) fifth. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 49.9% of the reported world total in 2024, producing about 1.7 times as much as Brazil. The top two together held about 79.4%, the top three about 84.5%, the top five about 89.6%, and the top ten about 93.9%. Only about 6% of reported production sits outside the top ten. The United States recorded the largest reported increase, rising from 46.3550 to 48.1800 Mmt (+1.8250 Mmt, about 3.9%). The world total rose from 93.6913 to 96.6231 Mmt (+2.9318 Mmt, about 3.1%), so the United States accounted for about 62% of the world increase. Brazil, the second-largest producer, recorded the largest decline among reported pairs, slipping from 28.8932 to 28.5615 Mmt (-0.3317 Mmt, about 1.1%). Reported world values were 88.9596 Mmt in 2019, 80.6498 Mmt in 2020, 84.1411 Mmt in 2021, 87.4858 Mmt in 2022, 93.6913 Mmt in 2023 and 96.6231 Mmt in 2024. After the 2020 dip, production grew in each of the next four years and ended about 8.6% above the 2019 level. The figures show the change over time but do not explain its causes. Ethanol is the larger of the two biofuels production categories reported in this dataset, with 96.6231 Mmt in 2024. Its production is also highly concentrated: the United States and Brazil alone accounted for 79.4% of reported world production. Hungary (0.6040 Mmt), the tenth-largest producer, shows that smaller European producers still register, but none approaches the scale of the two leaders. As elsewhere in this dataset, many countries have earlier values but no reported 2024 value. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual fuel ethanol production in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. Coverage is thinner than in other energy series: many countries have values for earlier years but no reported 2024 value. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers fuel ethanol production only; biomass-based diesel and total biofuels are reported separately in the source.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What is fuel ethanol?
Ethanol intended for blending into motor gasoline. It is reported separately from biomass-based diesel and from ethanol used for other purposes.
Which countries produce the most fuel ethanol?
The United States (48.1800 Mmt) and Brazil (28.5615 Mmt) reported the largest 2024 values by a wide margin, followed by India (4.9303 Mmt), China (3.4904 Mmt) and Canada (1.3870 Mmt).
Did Brazil's production fall in 2024?
Brazil slipped from 28.8932 Mmt in 2023 to 28.5615 Mmt in 2024 (-0.3317 Mmt, about 1.1%). The page reports the change; the source does not explain its causes.
Why do so few countries report 2024 values?
The table covers 69 countries, but only 57 have a reported 2024 value. Empty cells mean no reported value rather than zero, and many countries report values only for earlier years.
