Hen Eggs in Shell, Fresh Consumption by Country

China recorded the largest listed supply of fresh hen eggs in shell in 2023, at 26,647,111 tonnes, or 35.5 percent of the total across reporting countries. India ranked second with 6,687,000 tonnes, followed by Indonesia at 5,566,589 tonnes. On a per-person basis, Belgium led at 80.46 grams per day, ahead of Hong Kong at 73.61 grams. The listed total was 75,046,334 tonnes across 177 country rows, with values reported for 176. These figures come from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023 and measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.

China, India and Indonesia together accounted for about 51.8 percent of the listed 2023 total. China's lead is clear in overall tonnage, while Belgium ranks first when the figures are adjusted for population. These measures describe different aspects of the reported food supply and should not be treated as interchangeable rankings.

The Netherlands Records the Largest Recent Decline

The Netherlands fell from 403,383 tonnes in 2022 to 280,113 tonnes in 2023, a decrease of 123,270 tonnes, or 30.6 percent. The United States declined by 58,190 tonnes, while Taiwan fell by 54,640 tonnes. In contrast, India added 175,143 tonnes, Indonesia added 489,109 tonnes and China added 760,559 tonnes. Across the 176 countries with values in both years, the listed total increased from 73,163,285 to 75,046,334 tonnes, a rise of 1,883,049 tonnes, or 2.6 percent.

China Leads the Five-Year Increase

Across the 176 countries with values at both endpoints, the listed total rose by 6,313,126 tonnes between 2019 and 2023, an increase of 9.2 percent. China contributed the largest increase, adding 1,850,778 tonnes, followed by Indonesia with 1,796,580 tonnes and India with 1,352,750 tonnes. Myanmar moved in the opposite direction: its listed supply fell by 374,418 tonnes, or 80.8 percent, to 88,997 tonnes. Ukraine and Poland also recorded declines. Cuba has no later-year values in this dataset, so its 2019 figure should not be interpreted as proof that its supply fell to zero.

Belgium Ranks First in Hen Egg Supply per Person

Belgium recorded the highest listed supply per person in 2023, at 80.46 grams per day. Hong Kong ranked second at 73.61 grams, followed by Macau at 60.91 grams. Mexico, Malaysia and Grenada followed at 58.99, 58.19 and 58.11 grams per day, respectively. China ranked first in total tonnage but not in the per-person measure, illustrating how population size changes the comparison.

What the Hen Egg Supply Data Measures

The figures cover fresh hen eggs in shell listed as available for human consumption, expressed in tonnes and grams per person per day. Country totals describe the scale of the reported supply, while the per-person measure adjusts for population. Neither measure directly records how much people actually ate. Myanmar's five-year decline is notable, but the data alone does not explain its cause. Reported zeroes remain valid recorded values; blank cells indicate missing data and should not be treated as zero.

Methodology

The source is FAOSTAT's Supply Utilization Accounts. Element 5141 reports food supply quantity in tonnes, while element 665 reports food supply quantity in grams per capita per day. The dataset covers 2019-2023 and includes country rows rather than regional or world aggregates. The 2023 listed total sums the countries with a reported value for that year. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries with values at both endpoints. Reported zeroes are retained, while blank cells are treated as missing. Percentage changes use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Values below 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places where applicable.
