Honey Consumption by Country
In 2023, China held 278 thousand tonnes of listed honey food supply out of a listed total of 1,746 thousand tonnes across 162 reporters. China's 278 thousand tonnes represented 15.9 percent of the listed total, with the United States only 27 thousand tonnes behind at 251. Sierra Leone recorded the highest per-capita figure at 5.57 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
China leads at 278 thousand tonnes, 1.11 times the United States at 251. Per capita the order belongs to smaller reporters: Sierra Leone at 5.57 kilograms from 47 thousand tonnes, then Croatia at 2.60 and Greece at 2.25 kilograms. China records 0.20 kilograms per person. The five-year change came from small bases, not the leaders. Ethiopia added 67 thousand tonnes (up 515.4 percent) and Sierra Leone 46 thousand tonnes from 1 thousand tonne, together nearly half of the 229-thousand-tonne net increase, while China fell 12 thousand tonnes. Mexico, Poland, Iran and Brazil added between 11 and 16 thousand tonnes each. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 162 reporters with data in both years rose by 17 thousand tonnes, or 1.0 percent. Ethiopia, Canada and Brazil accounted for most of the largest increases, while Germany, New Zealand, Spain, Ukraine and France recorded notable declines. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of honey actually eaten. The 2023 table is led by China at 278 thousand tonnes, with the United States second at 251 and Türkiye third at 100. Ethiopia and Germany complete the top five at 80 thousand tonnes each. China holds 15.9 percent of the 1,746-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 36.0 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 45.2 percent and the top ten 61.1 percent. The 27-thousand-tonne gap between China and the United States was much narrower than the gap between the United States and Türkiye. Among the 162 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 1,729 thousand tonnes to 1,746 thousand tonnes, a gain of 17 thousand tonnes (1.0 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 162 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Ethiopia added 11 thousand tonnes (up 15.9 percent), Canada added 8 thousand tonnes (up 25.8 percent) and Brazil added 7 thousand tonnes (up 41.2 percent), while Germany fell 9 thousand tonnes (down 10.1 percent), New Zealand fell 8 thousand tonnes (down 80.0 percent), Spain fell 6 thousand tonnes (down 17.6 percent), Ukraine fell 6 thousand tonnes (down 85.7 percent) and France fell 5 thousand tonnes (down 10.2 percent). For the 162 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 1,517 thousand tonnes to 1,746 thousand tonnes, a gain of 229 thousand tonnes (15.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 164 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 162; Cuba and the Solomon Islands, with a combined 2 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Ethiopia added 67 thousand tonnes (up 515.4 percent), Sierra Leone added 46 thousand tonnes from 1 thousand tonne, Mexico added 16 thousand tonnes (up 72.7 percent), Poland added 16 thousand tonnes (up 177.8 percent), Iran added 13 thousand tonnes (up 21.0 percent) and Brazil added 11 thousand tonnes (up 84.6 percent), while China fell 12 thousand tonnes (down 4.1 percent) and New Zealand fell 11 thousand tonnes (down 84.6 percent). Ethiopia contributes 29.3 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by Sierra Leone at 20.1 percent. China's 12-thousand-tonne fall is small in absolute terms but notable as the only decline among the top three. Per capita, Sierra Leone's 5.57 kilograms from 47 thousand tonnes lead Croatia at 2.60 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 0.20 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Honey recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of honey people actually ate. Other sweeteners recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed honey food supply among the 162 reporters with reported values, at 278 thousand tonnes. The United States ranked second at 251 thousand tonnes, while Türkiye ranked third at 100 thousand tonnes. Sierra Leone had the highest per-capita honey food supply at 5.57 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of honey actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Honey from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 164 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 1,746 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 162 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Honey Food Supply at a Glance

Honey Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which small reporters drove the five-year increase?
Ethiopia added 67 thousand tonnes and Sierra Leone 46 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, together nearly half of the 229-thousand-tonne net increase. China fell 12 thousand tonnes over the same period despite leading the table.
Why does Sierra Leone lead honey food supply per person?
Sierra Leone recorded 5.57 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 47 thousand tonnes. Croatia followed at 2.60 kilograms per person, while China, first by total, recorded 0.20 kilograms.
Is the food supply of honey the same as honey eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
