Natural Honey Consumption by Country

China had the largest reported natural honey food supply in 2023, at 278,312 tonnes, accounting for about 15.9 percent of the listed total. The United States ranked second with 251,117 tonnes, followed by Türkiye with 99,626 tonnes. Sierra Leone recorded the highest reported supply per person, at 15.27 grams a day. The listed 2023 total was 1,749,421 tonnes, and 174 of the 176 country rows reported a value for that year, 172 of them above zero. These figures describe food available for human consumption, not the quantity people actually ate.

Germany placed fourth by volume at 80,000 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 36.0 percent of the listed 2023 total, with China alone supplying roughly 15.9 percent.

• New Zealand lost more than four-fifths of its 2022 level.

Germany and New Zealand Lead the Latest-Year Declines

Germany lost 8,700 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 9.8 percent to 80,000 tonnes. New Zealand lost 8,480 tonnes, down 81.2 percent, to 1,964 tonnes, and Spain shed 5,826 tonnes, down 17.2 percent. Ethiopia added 10,867 tonnes, up 15.7 percent, Canada added 8,275 tonnes, up 26.6 percent, and Brazil added 6,726 tonnes, up 39.2 percent. Every country with a 2022 value also reported one for 2023, so that shared total rose from 1,735,821 tonnes to 1,749,421 tonnes, up 13,600 tonnes, or 0.8 percent.

How Honey Supply Changed from 2019 to 2023

Between 2019 and 2023, the 174 countries with a value in both years rose by 224,908 tonnes, or 14.8 percent, from 1,524,513 tonnes at the start of the period. China remained the largest reporting country by volume even though its quantity fell by 11,995 tonnes, down 4.1 percent. Ethiopia added 66,933 tonnes, Sierra Leone added 46,503 tonnes, and Mexico added 16,533 tonnes, up 76.6 percent. India fell from 9,975 tonnes to 6.03 tonnes, and New Zealand shed 11,058 tonnes, down 84.9 percent. Cuba and Solomon Islands had a 2019 value but no 2023 value, and no country entered the comparison.

Natural Honey Supply per Person

Sierra Leone recorded the highest reported supply per person in 2023, at 15.27 grams a day, more than double the level of Croatia at 7.12 grams in second. Greece ranked third at 6.17 grams, and Albania fourth at 5.24 grams. These figures measure food supply per person, not directly observed consumption by individuals.

Understanding the FAO Honey Data

The dataset reports natural honey food supply in tonnes and in grams per person per day for 2019-2023, and the annual listed total sums reporting countries only, excluding regional aggregates. Reported zeros are retained while blank cells are treated as missing data.

Two series change sharply enough to warrant a source check: Sierra Leone rose from 527.76 tonnes in 2021 to 46,517 tonnes in 2022, and India fell from 9,975 tonnes in 2019 to 244.81 tonnes in 2021 and 6.03 tonnes in 2023. The data show the size of these movements but not their cause, so the original FAOSTAT records should be checked before any interpretation.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for natural honey over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries with available values for each year, and regional and other aggregate records are excluded. Of the 176 country rows, 174 reported a value in 2023 and 172 of those were above zero. Year-to-year and five-year comparisons use only countries with reported values at both endpoints, which gives the same set in both windows, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are distinct from missing values, and quantities under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.
