Ice Cream and Other Edible Ice Consumption by Country

The United Kingdom recorded the largest food supply of ice cream and other edible ice in 2023, at 91,264 tonnes, accounting for 14.4 percent of the annual listed total. The Philippines ranked second with 43,365 tonnes, followed by Portugal with 38,826 tonnes. On a per-person basis, however, the Maldives ranked first at 19.18 grams per person per day. The figures cover 147 reporting countries and areas, including 146 with a reported 2023 value, and come from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023. They measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Austria placed fourth at 30,878 tonnes, with Australia fifth at 28,372 and Mexico sixth at 21,623. Romania, Saudi Arabia, Sweden and Denmark closed the top ten between 17,644 and 21,276 tonnes. The top three held 27.4 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 36.7 percent. The United Kingdom had the highest listed food supply, while Maldives had the highest per-capita food supply.

Philippines Records the Largest Annual Increase

The Philippines added 13,407 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 44.8 percent to 43,365 tonnes. Portugal added 9,719 tonnes, up 33.4 percent. Spain added 7,234 tonnes, up 79.2 percent. Ireland lost 7,885 tonnes, down 64.2 percent. The 146 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023 increased from 590,594 tonnes to 634,016 tonnes, a gain of 43,422 tonnes, or 7.4 percent. The United States had reported 4,616 tonnes in 2022 but no value for 2023, so it is excluded from the year-on-year comparison. No country with a missing earlier-year value entered the comparison.

Five-Year Changes in Ice Cream and Other Edible Ice Supply

Between 2019 and 2023, the 146 countries with values in both years increased from 616,160 tonnes to 634,016 tonnes, a net gain of 17,856 tonnes, or 2.9 percent. The Philippines rose from a reported zero in 2019 to 43,365 tonnes in 2023, while Portugal added 20,206 tonnes and Australia added 13,125 tonnes. Iraq recorded the largest absolute decline, falling by 45,791 tonnes, or 93.5 percent. Ireland fell by 18,449 tonnes, or 80.8 percent, and Belgium went from 16,275 tonnes to a reported zero.

Maldives Leads Per-Person Food Supply

The Maldives ranked first in per-person food supply in 2023 at 19.18 grams per person per day. Moldova followed at 16.07 grams, ahead of the Marshall Islands at 14.44 grams and Micronesia at 13.19 grams. Montenegro and Tonga recorded 11.51 and 11.29 grams, respectively. Portugal, at 10.20 grams, also ranked among the ten highest values. The United Kingdom led in total tonnage but recorded 3.64 grams per person per day.

Ice cream and other edible ice for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only.

Belgium fell to a reported zero in 2023 from 16,275 tonnes in 2019, and the United States has no 2023 value after 4,616 tonnes in 2022; that blank is missing data, not zero. Large changes, including a fall from a substantial reported quantity to zero, should not automatically be interpreted as proof that the food was no longer available.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts log tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for ice cream across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year's value as the base. Percentage changes are not calculated when the base value is zero. The dataset numbers 147 countries after aggregates are taken away, 146 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
