Animal Fats, Butter and Cream Consumption by Country

India held 5,538 thousand tonnes of listed animal fats food supply in 2023, 20.4 percent of a 27,139-thousand-tonne total, while recording only 3.85 kilograms per person. The single-year change was almost flat, at a gain of 62 thousand tonnes, with much of China's gain offset by Belgium's 23.4 percent fall. All ten of the highest per-capita figures belong to European reporters, led by Belgium at 35.17 kilograms per person per year.

Animal Fats, Butter and Cream Consumption

India leads at 5,538 thousand tonnes, 2.32 times China at 2,392, with the United States third at 2,267 and Pakistan fourth at 1,505. Key Takeaways

The animal fats aggregate combines the animal-fat items in the FAO Food Balances classification, including raw animal fats, butter and ghee, and cream, each also treated in separate articles. Raw animal fats account for 10,708 thousand tonnes, while butter and ghee and cream make up the remainder of the 27,139-thousand-tonne aggregate.

India and the United States together added 1,418 thousand tonnes over five years, more than the net gain of 1,331. The single year balanced China's 173-thousand-tonne gain against Belgium's 126-thousand-tonne fall, with the remaining movers splitting evenly on each side.

India Holds 20.4 Percent While Recording 3.85 Kilograms Per Person

The 2023 table is led by India at 5,538 thousand tonnes, with China second at 2,392 and the United States third at 2,267. Pakistan and Germany complete the top five at 1,505 and 1,372 thousand tonnes, respectively. India holds 20.4 percent of the 27,139-thousand-tonne listed total.

The top three reporters accounted for 37.6 percent of the listed total, the top five 48.2 percent and the top ten 66.6 percent. India's per-capita figure of 3.85 kilograms sits below every per-capita top-ten entry, and China's 1.68 kilograms is lower still. Belgium, the per-capita leader at 35.17 kilograms, ranks outside the top ten by total with 412 thousand tonnes.

China's Gain Meets Belgium's Fall in a 0.2 Percent Annual Change

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 27,077 thousand tonnes to 27,139 thousand tonnes, a gain of 62 thousand tonnes (0.2 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 173 thousand tonnes (up 7.8 percent), India added 124 thousand tonnes (up 2.3 percent), the United States added 54 thousand tonnes (up 2.4 percent) and Poland added 49 thousand tonnes (up 6.8 percent), while Belgium fell 126 thousand tonnes (down 23.4 percent), the Netherlands fell 52 thousand tonnes (down 19.3 percent), Germany fell 50 thousand tonnes (down 3.5 percent) and Uzbekistan fell 49 thousand tonnes (down 22.6 percent).

The four gainers added 400 thousand tonnes and the four decliners removed 277 thousand tonnes, so the near-zero headline is the remainder of two balanced sides rather than a quiet year. Belgium's fall from 538 to 412 thousand tonnes is the largest absolute annual decline.

India and the United States Add More Than the 5.2 Percent Five-Year Net Gain

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 25,808 thousand tonnes to 27,139 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,331 thousand tonnes (5.2 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 28 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 740 thousand tonnes (up 15.4 percent), the United States added 678 thousand tonnes (up 42.7 percent) and Brazil added 244 thousand tonnes (up 27.0 percent), while Germany fell 162 thousand tonnes (down 10.6 percent), Russia fell 145 thousand tonnes (down 11.9 percent), Belgium fell 126 thousand tonnes (down 23.4 percent), Türkiye fell 118 thousand tonnes (down 41.1 percent) and Myanmar fell 99 thousand tonnes (down 68.3 percent).

India contributes 55.6 percent of the five-year net increase and the United States 50.9 percent, so the two together account for 106.5 percent of a net gain smaller than their combined increase. Türkiye's fall from 287 to 169 thousand tonnes and Myanmar's from 145 to 46 are the steepest proportional declines among the reporters listed in this comparison.

What Does the Animal Fats Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Animal Fats item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined animal fats total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums the animal-fat items, including raw animal fats, butter and ghee, and cream, and several of those items are also covered in separate articles.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why animal fats look concentrated in populous countries by total but in European reporters on a per-person basis.

Animal Fats, Butter and Cream Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, the 176 reporters with reported values recorded a combined 27,139 thousand tonnes of listed animal fats food supply. India had the largest total at 5,538 thousand tonnes, followed by China at 2,392 and the United States at 2,267 thousand tonnes. Belgium had the highest per-capita animal fats food supply at 35.17 kilograms per person per year. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of animal fats actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Animal Fats from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 27,139 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the animal fats aggregate; raw animal fats, butter and ghee, and cream are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the single-year total barely move?

The listed supply stood at 27,077 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 27,139 in 2023, a net gain of 62 thousand tonnes. China, India, the United States and Poland added 400 thousand tonnes together, while Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Uzbekistan removed 277 thousand tonnes. Why is Belgium the per-capita leader but an annual decliner?

Belgium's listed supply was 412 thousand tonnes in 2023, modest in volume terms, but its per-capita figure reached 35.17 kilograms per person per year, the highest shown. Its annual fall of 126 thousand tonnes was a 23.4 percent decline from 538 thousand tonnes in 2022. Total quantity and per-capita supply answer different questions.

Does animal fats food supply mean the amount people actually eat?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
