Jet Fuel Consumption by Country
Jet fuel consumption by country measures jet fuel product supplied per country, in million metric tons (Mmt) per year. Jet fuel is a refined petroleum product used in jet aircraft engines; motor gasoline and kerosene for heating or lighting are reported separately in the source. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 202 countries, with 201 reported 2024 values; the United States has no reported 2024 value. The world total stood at 242.7454 Mmt in 2024, up from 230.2837 Mmt in 2023.
Reported 2024 leaders show where the largest jet fuel product supplied values were recorded. China (34.699 Mmt) is first among reported values, followed by the United Kingdom (12.224 Mmt) and Japan (11.111 Mmt). Russia (11.001 Mmt) and the United Arab Emirates (9.746 Mmt) complete the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. China accounted for about 14.3% of the reported world total in 2024. The top three together were about 23.9%, the top five about 32.5%, and the top ten about 49.0%. This shows that jet fuel consumption is distributed across a relatively broad group of major markets. China 34.699 Mmt, United Kingdom 12.224 Mmt, Japan 11.111 Mmt, Russia 11.001 Mmt, United Arab Emirates 9.746 Mmt, Germany 9.023 Mmt, India 8.845 Mmt, Australia 7.449 Mmt. The ranking reflects the reported jet fuel values in the EIA series and does not identify the factors behind each country's position. China rose from 31.871 to 34.699 Mmt (+2.828 Mmt, about 8.9%). The United Kingdom rose from 11.165 to 12.224 Mmt (+1.059 Mmt). Japan rose from 10.117 to 11.111 Mmt (+0.994 Mmt). Germany fell from 9.477 to 9.023 Mmt (-0.454 Mmt), the largest decline among reported pairs. The world total rose from 230.2837 to 242.7454 Mmt (+12.4617 Mmt, about 5.4%). Reported world values are 329.1828 Mmt in 2019, 185.6133 Mmt in 2020, 152.3213 Mmt in 2021, 186.4100 Mmt in 2022, 230.2837 Mmt in 2023 and 242.7454 Mmt in 2024. China reported 37.051 Mmt in 2019 and 34.699 Mmt in 2024. No cause is stated in the source for the level change between years. Jet fuel here means jet fuel product supplied, not airport throughput, passenger counts or flights. EIA uses product supplied as a proxy for petroleum consumption because it measures petroleum products leaving the primary supply chain. The ranking therefore reflects reported fuel supply rather than aviation traffic statistics or population size. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual jet fuel consumption in million metric tons (Mmt). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers jet fuel consumption only and does not include motor gasoline or kerosene, which are reported separately in the source.
