China cut its maize imports nearly in half in a single year while Mexico's kept climbing, while Vietnam, which reported 9.2 million tonnes in 2023, left the 2024 ranking. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Maize (corn), 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 164 countries; 117 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 168.2 million tonnes. Countries appear below ordered by 2024 listed quantity, from largest to smallest.

Mexico was the largest maize importer in the 2024 listed data with 23,853,749 tonnes, followed by Japan with 15,276,693 tonnes and China with 13,635,894 tonnes. South Korea ranked fourth with 11,341,682 tonnes, ahead of Spain (9,382,677 tonnes), Egypt (7,890,034 tonnes), Italy (7,389,690 tonnes), Colombia (6,850,855 tonnes), the Netherlands (5,348,686 tonnes) and Taiwan (4,949,072 tonnes). Mexico also led on import value at 5,392,119,000 US dollars, followed by Japan (3,938,886,000) and China (3,758,781,000).

China's one-year retreat defines the latest data: down 12,606,128 tonnes (from 26,242,022 to 13,635,894 tonnes, down 48.0 percent), it exceeds the next three declines combined and alone outweighs Mexico's 5,353,348-tonne expansion. Yet the common reporter universe still grew 4.7 percent, because gains in Mexico, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt absorbed most of China's pullback alongside smaller advances elsewhere.

Mexico holds 14.2 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 1.56 times Japan's share; the top three together hold 31.4 percent, the top five 43.7 percent and the top ten 63.0 percent. Japan, China and South Korea lead East Asian buying, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands lead in Europe alongside Egypt across the Mediterranean, and Colombia and Peru (4,230,290 tonnes) carry South America. Türkiye took 4,510,657 tonnes (2.7 percent) in twelfth place, while Saudi Arabia (4,689,561 tonnes) and Malaysia (4,029,421 tonnes) round out the major Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian buyers.

Maize (Corn) Import Swings Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (115 countries with data in both years) rose from 158,059,401 tonnes to 165,412,472 tonnes, a change of 7,353,071 tonnes (4.7 percent). The totals listed for each year were 175,756,907 tonnes (151 reporters) and 168,162,587 tonnes (117 reporters); 36 countries reporting in 2023 (about 17.7 million tonnes combined, led by Vietnam with 9,218,119 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Türkiye added 2,479,771 tonnes (from 2,030,886 to 4,510,657 tonnes, up 122.1 percent), Saudi Arabia 1,925,994 tonnes (up 69.7 percent) and Egypt 1,593,847 tonnes (up 25.3 percent). Spain added 219,690 tonnes (up 2.4 percent) and Thailand 667,773 tonnes (up 49.3 percent).

Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (115 countries with data in both years) rose from 146,237,712 tonnes to 168,162,563 tonnes, a change of 21,924,851 tonnes (15.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 179,615,943 tonnes (156 reporters) and 168,162,587 tonnes (117 reporters); the 2020-2024 common universe of 115 reporters excludes the 41 countries reporting in 2020 (about 33.4 million tonnes combined, led by Vietnam with 12,144,713 and Iran with 9,881,678 tonnes) that did not report in 2024. Mexico added 7,973,629 tonnes (up 50.2 percent), Türkiye 2,211,043 tonnes (up 96.1 percent) and Saudi Arabia 1,618,679 tonnes (up 52.7 percent). Germany fell 1,117,410 tonnes (down 29.4 percent).

Methodology

This table adds up FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows into yearly reporter totals for item Maize (corn), import quantity and import value, 2020-2024. Quantities show two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above; values are full current US dollars with no inflation adjustment. The 2024 maize (corn) imports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the maize (corn) imports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. Only countries reporting quantities in both compared years feed change arithmetic, and reporters that enter or leave are tallied on their own lines. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may not match.
