India remained the second-largest fresh or chilled sheep meat producer in 2024, adding 150,598 tonnes from 2023. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Meat of sheep; fresh or chilled, 2020-2024, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 178 countries; 176 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 annual listed total is 11,534,817 tonnes. The 2024 country list runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

China produced 2.04 times as much as India: 2,640,525 tonnes against 1,292,048, while Australia ranks third with 927,230 tonnes, 364,818 tonnes behind India. The top two hold 34.1 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 927,230 and 509,539 tonnes respectively.

Meat of Sheep; Fresh or Chilled Production by Country in 2024

China was the largest fresh or chilled sheep meat producer in the 2024 listed data with 2,640,525 tonnes, followed by India with 1,292,048 tonnes and Australia with 927,230 tonnes. Türkiye ranked fourth with 509,539 tonnes.

China holds 22.9 percent of the listed 2024 total. The top three together hold 42.1 percent of the 11,534,817-tonne listed total.

China was the largest producer of fresh or chilled sheep meat in 2024, with 2,640,525 tonnes, followed by India with 1,292,048 tonnes and Australia with 927,230 tonnes. Together, the three largest producers accounted for 42.1 percent of the 11,534,817 tonnes in the 2024 listed total. India recorded the largest increase among these leading producers from 2023 to 2024, adding 150,598 tonnes, while overall production among countries reporting in both years declined by 0.5 percent.

India Adds 150,598 Tonnes as Meat of Sheep; Fresh or Chilled Production Eases 0.5 Percent

The common reporter universe (176 countries with data in both years) slipped from 11,595,059 tonnes to 11,534,817 tonnes between 2023 and 2024, a change of -60,242 tonnes (-0.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 11,595,084 tonnes (177 reporters) and 11,534,817 tonnes (176 reporters); 1 country reporting in 2023 (24.7 tonnes, Nicaragua) did not report in 2024, while no new reporters joined. India added 150,598 tonnes (up 13.2 percent), offsetting 250.0 percent of the decline, while Australia added 80,662 tonnes (up 9.5 percent) and China fell 68,901 tonnes (down 2.5 percent).

India Adds 408,858 Tonnes as Meat of Sheep; Fresh or Chilled Production Grows 9.5 Percent Among Common Reporters Since 2020

From 2020 to 2024 the common reporter universe (175 countries with data in both years) moved from 10,532,471 tonnes to 11,534,797 tonnes, a change of 1,002,326 tonnes (9.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 10,542,270 tonnes (177 reporters) and 11,534,817 tonnes (176 reporters); 2 reporters present in 2020 (Palestine, 9,774 tonnes, and Nicaragua, 24.45 tonnes) are absent in 2024, while 1 new reporter added 19.29 tonnes (Bhutan). India added 408,858 tonnes (up 46.3 percent) and Australia 269,440 tonnes (up 41.0 percent), while Türkiye added 163,900 tonnes (up 47.4 percent).

For fresh or chilled sheep meat production, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes. The 2024 fresh or chilled sheep meat production ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities. In the fresh or chilled sheep meat production data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For fresh or chilled sheep meat production changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Production quantities are reported to FAO by national statistical sources.
