Edible Offal of Sheep, Fresh, Chilled or Frozen Consumption by Country

China recorded the largest sheep offal food supply in 2023, at 530,460 tonnes, or 31.0 percent of the 1,709,138-tonne total reported across countries with available data. India ranked second at 93,336 tonnes, followed by Australia at 76,865 tonnes. Mongolia had the highest per-capita supply, at 32.38 grams per person per day, ahead of New Zealand at 19.52 grams. These figures come from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts and represent food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

Türkiye placed fourth at 73,526 tonnes, with Pakistan fifth at 66,974 and South Africa sixth at 49,176. Algeria, Iran, the United Kingdom and Morocco closed the top ten between 41,415 and 43,108 tonnes. The top three held 41.0 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 49.2 percent. China had the highest listed food supply, while Mongolia had the highest per-capita food supply.

United Kingdom Slips in Edible Offal of Sheep, Fresh, Chilled or Frozen

The United Kingdom lost 4,405 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 9.6 percent to 41,556 tonnes. Spain lost 4,055 tonnes, down 17.7 percent. Yemen shed 4,051 tonnes, down 33.3 percent. Australia added 13,012 tonnes, up 20.4 percent. Saudi Arabia added 10,736 tonnes, up 40.2 percent. Türkiye added 10,346 tonnes, up 16.4 percent. The 166 countries present in both years rose from 1,671,861 tonnes to 1,709,138 tonnes, up 37,277 tonnes, or 2.2 percent, with one arrival at 0.02 tonnes.

India Drives Growth in Sheep Offal Supply Since 2019

Between 2019 and 2023, the 165 countries present in both years rose from 1,455,817 tonnes to 1,709,119 tonnes, up 253,302 tonnes, or 17.4 percent. India added 71,132 tonnes, up 320.4 percent. China added 64,514 tonnes, up 13.8 percent. Türkiye added 59,614 tonnes, up 428.6 percent. South Africa lost 11,500 tonnes, down 19.0 percent. The United Kingdom gave up 4,350 tonnes, down 9.5 percent. Ireland shed 4,322 tonnes, down 95.5 percent to 203.9 tonnes. Four countries left with 2,260 tonnes, against two arrivals with 19.

Mongolia Leads in Sheep Offal Supply per Person

Mongolia's 32.38 grams a day topped the table, ahead of New Zealand at 19.52 and Australia at 7.96. Bahrain followed at 6.96 grams, with Kyrgyzstan at 6.31 and Kuwait at 6.24. Turkmenistan sat at 5.99 grams, with Syria at 4.79 and Albania at 4.44. China, first by volume, sat far down the daily table.

Ireland's 95.5 percent five-year fall ends at 203.9 tonnes yet still reports. Seychelles and Tonga sit at reported zero in 2023 after minor levels in 2022. Congo sat at a reported zero in 2023 after 13.58 tonnes in 2022.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts mark tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for sheep offal across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base, and zero bases use none. The universe counts 171 countries minus aggregates, 162 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 1,709,138 tonnes is the sum of the 162 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
