Natural Gas Consumption by Country

Natural gas consumption by country measures how much dry natural gas is consumed in each country, measured in billion cubic feet (Bcf) per year. The figures refer to dry natural gas consumption, in line with the underlying sources; production, imports and exports are reported separately. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 125 countries with a reported 2024 consumption value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 149,469 billion cubic feet in 2024, up from 146,246 in 2023.

Dry natural gas consumption reflects domestic use after processing and trade; it is not the same as gross production, which includes natural gas liquids and vented gas before processing.

The United States alone accounted for about 22 percent of the World total in 2024, and the United States and Russia together for about 34 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 37 percent, the top five for about 54 percent, and the top ten for about 64 percent. The United States consumed about 1.9 times as much gas as Russia, the second-largest consumer.

Countries With the Largest Natural Gas Consumption in 2024

The United States consumed the most natural gas in 2024 with 33,083 billion cubic feet. Russia ranked second with 17,651, followed by China (15,005), Iran (9,316), Canada (4,881), Saudi Arabia (4,357), Mexico (3,454), Japan (3,151), Germany (2,745), and the United Arab Emirates (2,535).

Natural Gas Consumption Around the World

In North America, the United States (33,083) leads by a wide margin, ahead of Canada (4,881) and Mexico (3,454). In Europe, Russia (17,651) is the largest consumer, ahead of Germany (2,745) and the United Kingdom (2,207); Türkiye and the Netherlands consume smaller volumes.

In Asia, China (15,005) leads, ahead of Japan (3,151) and India (2,513); Malaysia and Indonesia follow with smaller volumes. In the Middle East, Iran (9,316) leads, ahead of Saudi Arabia (4,357), the United Arab Emirates (2,535) and Qatar (1,653). In Africa, Egypt (2,102) and Algeria (1,877) are among the larger consumers, while in Oceania, Australia (1,739) leads.

Comparison of Natural Gas Consumption and Production

From the same EIA dataset, Dry production in 2024 was 148,970 billion cubic feet for the World, compared with 149,469 for consumption; the United States produced 37,767 and consumed 33,083, Russia produced 22,673 and consumed 17,651, and China produced 9,127 and consumed 15,005. The comparison is limited to the two indicators taken directly from the same EIA tables.

Global Structure in This Dataset

Consumption is less concentrated than production: the top five consumers account for about 54 percent of World consumption in 2024, compared with 58 percent for the top five producers. The structure was stable between 2019 and 2024, with the United States remaining the largest consumer in every year shown and China remaining in third place throughout the period.

Largest Changes in Natural Gas Consumption, 2023-2024

China recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 13,962 billion cubic feet in 2023 to 15,005 in 2024 (up 1,043, about 7.5 percent). Russia rose from 16,755 to 17,651 (up 896, about 5.4 percent), Iran by 159, Canada by 141 and Saudi Arabia by 76.

Azerbaijan recorded the largest decline, falling from 502 to 401 billion cubic feet (down 101, about 20 percent). Germany fell from 2,791 to 2,745 (down 46, about 2 percent), Mexico from 3,487 to 3,454 (down 33), and Japan from 3,178 to 3,151 (down 27). The World total rose from 146,246 to 149,469 billion cubic feet (up 3,223, about 2.2 percent).

China's consumption fell slightly in 2022 after strong growth in 2021, then returned to growth in 2023 and accelerated further in 2024. Germany's decline continued from 3,380 billion cubic feet in 2019 to 2,745 in 2024, showing a sustained decrease rather than a single-year swing.

Total Analysis for 2019-2024

The World total for consumption moved between 139,266 and 149,469 billion cubic feet in this period. It fell from 140,503 in 2019 to 139,266 in 2020, rebounded to 145,965 in 2021, and eased to 144,443 in 2022 before rising to 149,469 in 2024. China recorded the largest increase from 2023 to 2024, rising by 1,043 billion cubic feet, followed by Russia with an increase of 896 billion cubic feet. The United States increased by 464 billion cubic feet.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to dry natural gas consumption, in billion cubic feet per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.26-2 series where listed. The source reports no value where no data is available, which is shown as an empty cell. A value of 0 is shown where the source reports zero consumption. The sum of individually listed countries does not equal the World total where shown, because the source includes estimates and rounding. This is consumption and does not include production, imports, exports or reserves, which are reported elsewhere in the source.
