Oats Exports by Country
Canada lost nearly half a million tonnes of oats exports since 2020 but still exported more than three times as much as second-placed Finland in 2024. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Oats, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. The table lists 106 countries; 71 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 3.3 million tonnes.
Canada was the largest oats exporter in the 2024 listed data with 1,524,073 tonnes, followed by Finland with 506,437 tonnes and Australia with 324,519 tonnes. Poland ranked fourth with 145,867 tonnes, ahead of Estonia (112,983 tonnes), Sweden (101,751 tonnes), France (65,353 tonnes) and Latvia (65,332 tonnes). Canada also led on export value at 445,154,000 US dollars, followed by Finland (150,293,000) and Australia (122,757,000). Canada's 2020-2024 retreat of 498,470 tonnes stands at 172 percent of the common-universe net decline of 289,599 tonnes: the leader shrank faster than its market, with gains in Australia, Finland and Estonia absorbing much of the fall. That Canada still holds 45.8 percent at a 3.01 ratio shows how far ahead it started. The top three hold 70.8 percent of the listed 2024 total, the top five 78.5 percent and the top ten 88.7 percent. European exporters cluster behind the leader, with Finland, Poland, Estonia, Sweden, France, Latvia, the Czech Republic (47,212 tonnes) and Denmark (29,272 tonnes), while Australia carries Oceania almost alone and the United States (38,292 tonnes) trails far behind its northern neighbour. Across the 60 countries reporting in both years, total exports fell from 3,818,126 tonnes in 2023 to 3,319,604 tonnes in 2024, a change of -498,522 tonnes (-13.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,825,974 tonnes (75 reporters) and 3,328,555 tonnes (71 reporters). Finland added 196,142 tonnes (up 63.2 percent) and Estonia 39,877 tonnes (up 54.5 percent), while Ukraine added 20,061 tonnes (from 3,250 to 23,311 tonnes) from a small base. Canada fell 247,938 tonnes (down 14.0 percent) and Australia 199,059 tonnes (down 38.0 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (62 countries with data in both years) fell from 3,616,007 tonnes to 3,326,408 tonnes, a change of -289,599 tonnes (-8.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,706,797 tonnes (82 reporters) and 3,328,555 tonnes (71 reporters); 20 countries reporting in 2020 (90,790 tonnes combined, led by Russia with 76,153 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Australia added 194,160 tonnes (up 148.9 percent) and Ireland 33,352 tonnes (from 12,528 to 45,880 tonnes) from a small base. Sweden fell 85,221 tonnes (down 45.6 percent). Reporter totals for oats exports add up FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for 2020-2024, separately for quantity and for value. Russia’s 76,153 tonnes in 2020 and 198,870 tonnes in 2021 have no counterpart from 2022 onward, which is why reporter continuity matters here: only countries present in both compared years feed change arithmetic. The oats exports series displays quantities below 1,000 tonnes to two decimals and larger quantities as whole tonnes; its values are full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 oats exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the oats exports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. The oats exports change uses overlapping reporters only; countries entering or leaving the listed set are shown separately. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may not match.Oats Exports by Country in 2024

Frequently Asked Questions
How can Canada shrink and still lead?
Canada fell from 2,022,543 tonnes in 2020 to 1,524,073 tonnes in 2024 (down 24.6 percent) and still holds 45.8 percent at a 3.01 ratio over Finland. The 498,470-tonne retreat exceeded the 289,599-tonne net decline of the common universe, with Australia, Finland and Estonia absorbing the difference.
Why is Ukraine's 617.3 percent rise shown with its base?
Ukraine grew from 3,250 tonnes in 2023 to 23,311 tonnes in 2024, an increase of 20,061 tonnes. The triple-digit rate reflects division by a small base and belongs beside the absolute gain, not instead of it.
Does Russia's absence distort the 2020 comparison?
Russia reported 76,153 tonnes for 2020 and 198,870 tonnes for 2021, then reported no quantity from 2022 through 2024, the largest of 20 reporters missing in 2024 (90,790 tonnes combined). Each-year totals therefore flatter 2020; the 8.0 percent common-universe decline compares only the 62 continuing reporters.
What is missing from this oats exports picture?
Whether oats output rose or fell, who consumed it, or what it cost to produce; none of that is in this dataset. It records export quantities and values by reporter, so only export-side comparisons hold.
